My future college's track coach would like to watch me compete, dilemma, advice please!? - April 15th 2011, 11:40 PM

I'm a senior in high school and will be attending Rutgers University this fall. I've been throwing shot put on my school's track and field team since last year. So today, my mom met Rutger's softball coach, who is close to Rutger's girls track coach. My mom mentioned that I throw shot put and gave the softball coach my name. Withing a few hours of this conversation I received an e-mail from the track coach stating that he'd love to have me on their team and requested my schedule so he can watch me throw.

The problem is, I only throw 22-23 ft which I feel won't meet his expectations. Then he'll see other girls throwing farther then me and offer them scholarships and whatnot, so I'm afraid to give him my schedule. I feel like if he waited until the end of the season I could be throwing 25 ft by then. I checked their stats online, and their shortest distance is around 28 ft.

Then again, I've progressed a distance of over 5 ft since I started last year and maybe after speaking to my coaches, he'll realize I have potential. I want to speak to my throwing coach first but I won't see her until Monday, and I don't want to wait three days to reply to his e-mail. I was thinking of telling him I'll need to get an updated schedule and send it to him after Monday. In your opinion, what do you think I should do?

I didn't have intentions of throwing shot put in college, but I'm going to miss it alot and I'd like to challenge myself by taking up this oppurtunity.

EDIT: I sent him my schedule because I figured not everybody gets the oppurtunity to have contact like this. So if anybody has any further advice, It'd be appreciated.

I'd say just try your best! If it works out, then great and if not, it's not the end of the world. I'm sure you'll do great! Congrats on Rutgers. I know a lot of people who go there.

Good luck!

You should feel flattered that he has taken an interest in you! Sure, there is always someone else who can throw farther or run a faster mile, but there is a lot more to be considered in an athlete. You should send the coach an e-mail and tell him whatever you feel like he needs to know. He may see a lot of potential in you!
