Martial Arts Poll - June 23rd 2011, 09:55 AM

There was another thread, ignore that one, I screwed it up, this one is the correct one. Once you have voted, please state how long you have been doing martial arts for. Also, if you are doing more than one, state your favourite (if you have any).

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Me neither, but I took a self defense class last semester and loved it.

At various points, I've done a dozen or so sessions of Judo, Tae Kwon Do and a couple of sessions of Ju-jitsu.

I do Muay Thai in training for MMA, its addictive but I dont have the killer in me to go into serious fights for it. I watched MMA 81 I think again the other day and in the pre match talk down the other guy said he wanted to rip the skin from his face and then proceeded to take a beating from someone much bigger than him and just turned it around to force a tap out so quickly.

Starting with the most frequent: Boxing, Capoiera, Kick Boxing, Karate and Krav Maga.

Any others that I've partially learnt (very partially) have been through stuff like youtube vids. Don't really know the names of them though' cos it's kind of informal the way I go about it.

I used to do karate when I was younger but I was too hyper-active to continue Last summer I took on boxing it was fine but I came to a conclusion that is a sport doesn't involve running I can't do it.

What is Kali?

Do you train in all the listed martial arts right now (except Kali) or is that a list of ones you've trained in throughout your life? If you do train in all them right now (except Kali), then to me training in all those styles is redundant. Krav Maga is very much like MMA, minus less ground work. Muay thai would compliment MMA but again, having krav maga in the mix is just redundant. BJJ is not redundant because none of those styles (possibly except Kali as I don't know what that is) don't have focus on ground work. Krav maga has some but not as much.

If you're doing BJJ, would you consider training in judo or wresting, as that combination would be amazing. I know BJJ has some judo throws and wrestling given it was initially for self-defense. I'm going to generalize by saying in MMA, such as UFC and Pride, the fighters usually have a good grasp on BJJ or JJ but their take-downs and throws are often quite poor. I know judo uses a gi but even so, many of the throws can be done without a gi.

Are you planning to compete in MMA?

Taekwondo for about ten years now and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about two. Hoping to try out Wing Chun, Ninjutsu, and Krav Maga when I move to San Antonio for college

That is a description of Kali.

I currently train in all of those martial arts. I don't do a whole lot of BJJ currently because of some family issues.
I take Krav Maga for self-defense. My city is listed one of the most dangerous ones in America, so self-defense is very important.

I would like to train judo/wrestling at some point, but my school doesn't offer them (that I know of)
Competing in MMA will depend on how my body continues to handle all of the martial arts I'm doing. I've been having a repeat shoulder injury so I'm taking it as it goes.

Re: Martial Arts Poll - July 3rd 2011, 08:36 PM

I did a Judo session when I was about 10 and quite enjoyed it, but the only bits of that I've done since have been groundwork and some of the throws for Jiu-Jitsu. I did that for about 18 months or so and got to Green belt which I was chuffed with - really enjoyed it but it was killing my knees and there isn't a club nearby so I've had to stop for now. Once I move somewhere which has a club and can find a way to stop my knees getting pounded so much, I think a new gi might be in order...

Many martial arts were developed for use in self-defense, such as judo and BJJ. I'm not understanding why you choose to take a list of martial arts, many of which are incredibly similar, at the same time. The only reason I can think of is to give a long list of martial arts to hopefully impress or scare someone. If you want to compete in MMA, why not reduce training in some of the martial arts?

Ninjuitsu has always sounded awesome to me, tell me how it goes once you start. I thought about doing it but after using a pair of nun-chucks our sensei has at the dojo (even though none of us train in using them I'm not sure why they're there) and getting whacked in the nuts either by trying a fancy move, or someone else went swinging wildly all over the room and got me in the nuts, I've decided to let them be .

I enjoy the learning and taking each one. While BJJ is for self-defense, they don't teach stand-up street defense like Krav Maga does. I do not take martial arts to impress/scare people. That would be silly.
I can't compete in MMA until I'm 18. I'm 16 now. Plus, like I mentioned, my shoulder keeps giving me issues so I'll have to see how it's holding up when I'm 18.

Yeah, nunchucks are a pain to get a hang of but I've grown to love them (plus you learn quickly when fertility is on the line)
Anyways, I'm probably going to end up going with Krav Maga out of sheer functionality. Hopefully I'll grow up to be rich and can try out dozens of styles
And as for why Kitty is learning multiple martial arts, each has its own perks and, while those are all really similar, I could probably name a few of each. Either way, I'd be afraid to bump into her in a back alley with all that under her belt

What would you be looking for in the martial art? Like practicality, a workout, etc?

I've never done one. I want to try BJJ or maybe Krav Maga someday, but for now I'm focusing on Parkour (which itself shares a lot with martial arts).

What are you referring to? The list of options in the poll? If so, you're absolutely wrong, karate is a separate martial art not a general term and it shows you know nothing about martial arts, except TKD.

What dan are the both of you?

SoraKat, I haven't heard of people getting a black belt in 4 years all that often. When I do, it's usually from a "McDojo", although I'm not saying you went to such a place. Unfortunately, I've had people come to our dojo and previously had a high ranking, such as brown or purple belt. In that class, we did sparring and students of the same rank easily beat them, even a yellow belt beat them. To their dismay, our sensei had them start as a white belt. Not saying you went to such a place, some people can work very hard and excel up the ranks quickly.

-George Eliot

"Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it."
