Chicago - May 5th 2012, 04:16 AM

Hi! Well, I potentially could be living in Chicago next year. I was just wondering if any of you guys live in Chicago so you could let me know what you thought? I'd be going into my freshmen year and I don't know anybody in Chicago or at least no one who would be going to the school I went to. So, I'd love if you guys could give me some feedback... What's Chicago like compared to a regular town/township/etc.? What are the teenagers AND highschools like in Chicago? What woul dbe the best way to make new friends going into highschool in Chicago?

Hi J.Lynn!

I live in Chicago, so hopefully I can help you out with some of your questions. High school in Chicago is just like anywhere else. However, as you will notice (if you live near southern Chicago, or western Chicago), Private schools are pretty huge. I find that around my area, Private schools are every mile, and you find less and less of public schools. In fact, it seems like Teenagers segregate themselves at times according to which school they go to, and the high school competitiveness is very intense.

High school is great - don't let me scare you! Public schools in Chicago are pretty decent (but I would have to say that Private schools have a 100% different environment and its recommended). If you do go to a public school, depending on location (bad neighborhoods, or good neighborhoods) you may find a strong gang/drug presence, or on the other hand you may find a friendly environment. Chicago is funny, you can go from walking in a good neighborhood to walking 4 blocks away and find yourself feeling threatened. Some parts of Chicago are also segregated by race/ethnicity, but there usually isn't to much of a problem there.

Over all Chicago is a great city, and Chicago (like all cities) have there ups and downs. Currently the educational system is on the decline (public schools) due to teachers striking about wages and unfair features, and the major is actually combining more public schools to save money which will cause further problems (thus why Private schools are growing in enrollment). Chicago overall has beautiful landmarks downtown, and is most places if a beautiful city.

As far as making friends, I would say that it is pretty easy as long as you are active and actually put effort into it (like any school/city). In most cases people wont go to you, you need to go to them. High school will be challenging, and you will lose/make friends throughout your High school career.

I personally would not move anywhere else in the world. I love Chicago, and I love Illinois in general.

If you ever have any questions about anything (like Chicago, the education, towns, suburbs [North, South, East, West], landmarks, politics, etc), feel free to PM me!

Best wishes,
Chris
