Talking A trip to the Philippines? - February 26th 2012, 10:57 PM

Soo I wasn't sure if this should go under Travel or Religion, so sorry if it's in the wrong spot.

July 7th I'll (hopefully) be leaving on a five-week mission trip to the poorest areas of the Philippines. The areas where they have no shelter, clothing, or even food. Having lived in American suburbs my whole life, I'm a little nervous as it will be a big culture shock for me. I feel like I need to go, though, because God called me to do it. Plus, it's what I want to do with my life.. I'm not even afraid of dying because I know if I was a martyr people would realize it's not just some fake thing.

... sorry for getting off topic for a second. Anyway, I was just hoping anyone who had been on a similar trip and/or had been to the Philippines could give me some advice about what it's like/ what to expect/ weather/ really anything I might need to prepare for before the trip? Thanks

I've never been to Philippines but I know some people from there through an another forum. I'll ask them about this and get back to you soon

[EDIT]

Okay here is what she said-

Quote:
July, which is when you have scheduled your visit here, is the month of disaster preparedness simply because. we expect disasters in that month, typhoons, flooding... So in a sense if you want to help the people here that would be a good time to do so but since it is a month when there are many typhoons coming in the country, the weather during that time is very gloomy.

With respect to what to expect, I'd say the poorest places here in the Philippines are the slum areas, people living under the bridge with make shift houses and many other locations that you might not even imagine. I can provide you some insight on these places but as I don't know exactly where it is you really want to go and what "poorest places" means to you I am not giving it now lest you'd have a very ugly picture of our country bahahahaha

If you have more questions or need to know anything else let me know.
