Similar alternatives to 13 reasons why? - May 15th 2017, 03:48 PM

Hi friends! So I didn't like the way 13 Reasons Why portrayed mental health, and I was kinda disappointed since I'd hoped it would be good. Does anyone know of other books/shows/movies that have better representation of mental health issues or suicide?

Thanks

It might help to know what you didn't like about it, and what you are looking for. I know of quite a few others but I don't know that I liked any of them more than I liked 13 reasons why so it's hard for me to know which to recommend.

Oh good point! I didn't like how it showed everyone suddenly appreciating Hannah more after she was gone, like suicide got her the attention she'd wanted. I also didn't like how the show blamed her suicide on the actions of other people and made it seem like suicide can be a specific person's fault. I think the show had a really good idea to show how harmful bullying can be and talking about suicide but I just really didn't like how they handled it.

The thing is, suicide isn't black and white. There's no one way to kill yourself, there's never one exact reason that leads someone to take their life, there's always going to be a different back story leading up to the moment suicide takes place. While I hate how Hollywood seems to have a limited understanding of sensitive issues, such as bullying, depression, and suicide, they took one angle of it and turned it into a series. I know it was a book originally and I haven't seen it, but it's definitely something to consider.

No two people are going to have the exact same experience when it comes to depression, bullying, and suicide. And the reactions those people had in the series is actually pretty common, but it's understandable how it can be annoying. These people picked on Hannah while she was alive, bullied her and were in part of her making the ultimate decision (again, the angle Hollywood chose) and then they suddenly are mourning for her; but that's the case for a lot of real life scenarios.

I agree that it would be a good idea if you suggested ideas of what you want to read related to what 13 Reasons Why didn't handle appropriately.

I haven't fully watched 13 reasons why as I wasn't in a good state of mind when it came out.

I actually posted this same type of question (books and movies) and there were some responses. Here's the link to my thread

bit gutted like with how the thread was shut like that I got no chance to have my say. I could get it if it had been like ages without replies.
It is so weird though with how it goes back and forth - sometimes showing things after her death and sometimes showing her when she was alive. Who else gets a dizzy head from all of that?
