I cant take it anymore!

My laptop suddenly decided to not work properly on me, and I really can not figure out how to solve the problem.

After about 20mins of working fine, it will start to go very slow and programs will stop responding. If I'm playing music that will start to skip, same with any videos.

I have done numerous disk clean-ups, restarted the computer, deleted stuff and checked my antivirus etc (Norton 360).
I managed to find out that 7 important updates havent been installed, one of which is called Service Pack 1 (for Vista). I have the option to download and install these updates, which I've been trying to do, but for some reason it comes back saying 'cannot install updates, encountered an unknown error'.

What are the full specifications of your laptop?
You can find most of them if you go to my computer and click on system information at the top.
