Security. - April 16th 2010, 01:38 AM

I was wondering how to make my computer password protected from other people in my network seeing my computer. I have a password on my computer. but like from their computers needing a password to see mine.

You can actually stop your computer from being on a network, which I believe is safest.. but I understand that's not what you're asking.. as for your question, I'm not sure.

Home network, stick a password on (it's not "safe" but it's a sufficient deterrant). Work network, not much you can do, just disable any shared folders if you have them.

How do I get to the place to put a password on it? I'm totally technology illiterate.

Re: Security. - April 16th 2010, 07:15 PM

I use windows 7, I have a password to log onto my computer, but I'm worried that other people in my network (my family) can see my stuff, my mom's laptop has a password that you need to see her stuff, over her network.. I was trying to figure out how to do the same thing.

There's nothing they can do to see into your computer (unless they implant a trojan onto it, and frankly I don't think I have ever met someone who can do that). They can however technically tap into whatever website you visit, but seriously I've only heard of someone do this once and he was a comp science student preparing a lecture on hacking! Your login password is a good enough defence, also don't leave it lying around logged in.

But you do have to ask yourself the question, would they really bother?

They probably would, but this makes me feel a bit better. Thanks for your help!
