New hair color - January 22nd 2009, 11:58 AM

Well at the moment. my hair is a strange color.
Its kinda black, and I tried dying it a pinky red color and now its a blacky pink.
How would I get from this color to an actual pinky red.
I hope it'd suit me. Pale skin and bright blue eyes (:

If you want it bright and vivid, you may have to lighten your hair.
Try get permanent dyes as they give the best results on dark hair.

To get the best results, it's worth investing in a salon visit. They can give you the best dye job and the best advice.

I would suggest saving up for that, then, instead of trying to do it yourself.

I'm pretty sure a salon job would cost ~$100, depending on salon, what you're having done, how long it takes, things like that. So yeah, it's expensive.

If you have black hair though, you would need to strip it first if colored black, then bleach it at least once, tone it, then put in pink dye. If you buy the dye yourself, you can get the salon to put it in for you.

It looks black in pictures, but it actually isnt. Its like a browny pinky reddy color lol. Its really strange..
And I dont know how much $100 dollars would be in pounds :S
and stripping hair isnt exactly good...

lighten your hair. the lighter it is the brighter bolder and more viberant. on the box, idk if its on like COLOR boxes but on regular dye boxes (ie blonde, redhead), they should have something to show how the colour would turn out with your hair colour.

and if you want it the most brightest and whatnot, bleach your hair

Google converted it to 57 pounds for me, so around that I'd think.

Stripping is horrible on the hair, but dying it is also harmful. Since you don't have dyed black hair, it shouldn't be a problem though. A bit of bleach and dye and you're good to go.
Or if you aren't afraid to experiment, KoolAid. I tried dying my hair with it over a dyed darker hair, it lightened it quite a bit. Horrible because I had JUST dyed it red and was only trying for touch ups but it turned a vibrant orange [which was awesome, but was not red]. If you tried with a pink KoolAid it might bleach it pink, then dye pink over it and you'll get a good result.

You can get KoolAid from the grocery store, but make sure you get the kind without sugar added. If you need directions or tips or anything, feel free to PM me. I've dyed with KoolAid probably over 20 times now :]

Hey Jasmine, as far as I'm aware you can't get koolaid over here
but as people have said
if you want it bright pink/red your gunna have to lighten your hair, easiest way to do this is probably bleach.
If you can I'd get an experienced friend to do it, or try it on a little bit of your hair first, see if you like the effect xx

when my mum gets hers done proffesionally, it costs about 70. You'd probably be best off bleaching it and then dying it pinky red.

Re: New hair color - January 28th 2009, 10:00 PM

ok. Stripping your hair color/prelightening/bleaching, is WAY more damaging than just adding a tint (dye) I don't recommend doing it at home, you can/most likly will, fry your hair. With that said, since you said you tried to dye it previously let me add this in too. Color does NOT lift color. Since you have already put an artifical color on your hair, a lighter box color WILL NOT lift it right. In order for you to get a bright red pink you will have to prelighten. I strongly advise doing this in a salon. A way to make it cheaper is just to have it prelightened in the salon. Then go home and add your color. (then go get some deep conditioning products!!!) The stylist are trained professionals, just because you can buy some "bleach"/prelighteners at a beauty supply place DOES NOT MEAN you should try it at home. You could end up with no hair at all.
