Would blonde dye go over black? - February 28th 2010, 03:37 PM

I dyed all of my hair black a few years ago, but Im starting to miss my blonde hair. I was thinking about dying the top part of my hair blonde and leave underneath black, but would the blonde go over the black? If i do it im going to have my grandma who is a professional do it.

If she's a professional you could always ask her for her professional opinion.

But I've been in your situation before! When did you last put black hair dye on your hair? Because it's extremely difficult to go from black to blonde.

You WONT be able to use any ordinary blonde dye, it will need to be BLEACH. And this could, and more than likely will, damage your hair!!

What I did was, over the course of a few months, to a year, was to have a number of bleach highlights all over my hair. I did this every few weeks until it was blonde enough to use an all over blonde dye.

Normal all over blonde dye wont work on your dyed hair. It wont even make a different if you put it on the black hair. Bleach, as it sounds, will bleach over the dye. But if you tried to bleach all over, in one go, then you risk going ORANGE and have your hair FALLING OUT!!

So be warned. You need to research this, get professional opinions and take things slow. Otherwise you'll have very dry damaged hair, risk it falling out or have it go orange!

Take care, and PM me if you need any more advice!

you'll have to bleach it or it won't work..

i would not recommend going from black to very light blonde, it'll ruin your hair..

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

I had black hair about a two years ago and only now I'm blonde. I had to wait a while for the colour to fade a brown(ish) colour and then used bleach, had brown hair for a bit then had blonde highlights. Go to a hairdressers to have it done though. Using normal blonde dye will not work at all.

I wouldnt suggest this.

My friend had black hair, pitch black, she bleeched it and it went orange.

Bleach would work but not normal blonde hair dye.

If you're from the UK there's a dye/bleach called Smart Blonde. It can bleach hair up to 7 whole shades lighter so it'd make black hair go medium blonde. I've used it before but I've never got the hang of using bleach but if you're grandma's a professional then it should be okay.

Ha, I tried that.
First I dyed it lighter brown.
Then I had to bleach it twice. O_O
Because then I wanted to get a really bright red.
So going to blonde is what I had to do.
Even then it was like a strawberry blonde, not pure blonde.
In the end my mom hated the hair color.
Then I went back to black. =(

(Oh and with bleach, it honestly didn't really hurt my hair? O_o? I don't know maybe im just lucky. I had my friend do it who dyes her hair all the time. So she's pro at types of dyes etc. I dunno. People said I was just lucky.)

I'll do whatever it takes to be the mistake you can't live without.
