What's with all these peace signs I see? - May 25th 2009, 06:11 AM

I can't help but notice that nowadays, like in American Eagle or Pacsun, everyone's wearing these heart-shaped peace signs on handbags, shirts, bracelets, necklaces...heck, they even draw it all over their artwork. I know what it means- 'love and peace.' But you know what? I think these people are wearing that symbol as an accessory. Are they really working for love and peace?

It doesn't bother me, but it makes me wonder. Is this a new trend that's going on? I'm lost.

Yeah, it's a trend. I've noticed it as well. I'm pretty sure that not everyone who wears a peace sign these days is an activist. Oh well. At least they're promoting something good by wearing it, I guess.

You mean something like this? --> http://images1.cafepress.com/product...x350_Front.jpg

Well, I haven't seen them around all that much. But I think you're right, if they sell them in places like Hollister and that, most people probably buy them simply because they look stylish. But oh well, people can wear what they want, I barely ever pay attention to what other people are carrying/wearing anyways, because it always tends to annoy me

The people who wear them, ironically, are the type of people who like to start sh*t with anyone who disagrees with them. Funny, eh?

Someone needs to bring back the peace frogs!

Yeah, its a trend. If Hollister and abercrombie think its cool, then so does all the unoriginal people who shop there.

It is an annoying trend. I wear a peace necklace and I have done for years, I never take it off.
I wear it for two reasons, the first and main reasons is my Nan's name means Peace so it reminds me of her so I got it when she passed away. Then when I got older I understood more about what was going on in the world and now I do actually want peace in the world.

Now I am getting people commenting on it because it is fashionable and all the popular kids are taking notice of it now when I have been wearing it for years since my Nan passed away.

I think it's silly. As if the president is gonna come to the suburbs and be like, "Oh my god, look at all these peace signs! These 14 year old girls who know virtually nothing about war and other countries and who generally start fights with their friends over stupid retarded things have really changed my mind! DUDE! CALL THE MILITARY! We're pulling out of Iraq!! NOW."

Heh. I'm not saying I'm for war or anything. And I realize we are actually somewhat attempting to pull out. I just enjoy making fun of people. Thats all.

@ Razzmatazz Rach: if I were you, I'd lecture those popular kids on what peace is really about. And why you support it (since it reminds you of someone you lost).

@ nothing-but-regrets: There ya go! You just summed up all my thoughts into one hilariously snarky sentence. You rock!

Heya! My goodness, I know what you mean.

I was in Target yesterday and at least 30% of stuff had some sort of peace symbol or sign on it - no joke, it was pretty weird. Not going to lie though, I've always had a love of peace symbols [makes me feel like a hippie AND it stands for peace - what's better than that?] and I'm not going to not wear peace-y stuff just because it's getting "popular" 'cause that is just silly.

But yes, agreed. Good observation.

I have to say, I hate people who wear peace signs who don't believe in it. I've had ban the bomb signs [they were started by CND campaign for nuclear disarmament] on jewellery, patches since I understood the concept, and when I turned 18 I joined greenpeace to futher support it.
CND is my next step Fads for something important, sure it means they get more notice, but most people just don't care!

I know what you mean.
I actually used to be one of those crazily obnoxious people :P

but I read this book called the history of peace or whatever I can't remember exactly what is was called but my friend's mum let me borrow it and it totally changed my perspective on it, i realised what it truly meant and I just didn't feel right wearing something that I know nothing about. I mean it's an amzing cause and everything, but I hate the fact that so many people are like "sure, peace, whatever" when actually the sign dates back years...

Peace signs are cool, but I actually haven't seen this trend. Perhaps I am not so observant lol... I'll keep my eyes out. But hey, what's wrong with a few peace signs anyways? We need the peace.... everywhere

Especially when they're hypocrites themselves. XP
I would take the choker off for a day or two, just to see what people say.

I'm a bit of a hippie and my clothes have always mirrored that, but the recent rise in the peace symbols has irritated the heck out of me, first off i don't lke the war but what were we supposed to do, sit on our thumbs while extremist groups blew things up all around us?
But seriously come on how many of these people are actually fighting to end this war or in the war, 80% of them have no real clue what is going on, but continue to wear your medalions or clothes or what ever, how else are we going to educate the ignorate generation our parents have created?

I've always liked peace signs, so I'm stocking up while they're trendy and cheap

I guess it doesn't really bother me that other people wear peace signs, it's just ironic because most of them don't even care about the actual cause. Oh well. I guess there are worse things.

I guess they're just popular right now. It's kinda annoying that they don't usually know what they're talking about, but at least it's making some of them find out. And I'd rather see peace signs everywhere than swastikas.

Agreed. If you're going to use the peace sign, prove it. If I wear it, It's because I support the lifestyle.

It's annoying when something becomes popular that you like to wear.
Because then people will notice and think you're just following the trend.

Yeah, really! For instance, I'd been wanting to read Twilight for the longest time. I even had it at the top of a list of books I wanted, and this was in 2006 or something? But I never got around to it. Then it got popular and I didn't want to read it anymore. lol

It's understandable
and I agree with some
of the previous posts. and I did
have a peace necklace and yes, it
was because I believed in it and
it did to be honest annoyed me because
I seen people wearing it who don;t believe in it
and just to wear to look good , please, call me for
exaggerating but it's just me but I do believe in peace.
So i decided to give it to my younger sister and i still
wear my peace ring. [:

There is only one person who could ever
make you happy, and that person is you.
