Is this even possible? - June 25th 2009, 11:11 PM

Well, I do a lot of volunteer work with --. I want to do something big this summer. I've already started writing a book - called Canadian Teen. I have written just short of twenty pages in MS Word but I really want to continue it.

I want to create a short book, maybe a hundred pages or so, that deals with teenagers. For instance, so far I have about ten stories that were told to me from teenagers about teen issues - like drugs, abuse, violence, etc. I also have an area where I asked teenagers to submit their advice to other teenagers.

I want to continue the book and eventually get it published - somehow. Once it's published, I want to sell it and all profits will go to help --. -- has a huge banquet in November and I know I could sell a ton there!

My questions:

1) Do you know what else my book could benefit from? I have teen stories and teen advice. Anything else you think would be a good thing for the book?

2) Is this even possible? I am not rich. I spoke to a representative from -- and because they have limited funds to begin with, they won't be able to fund my project in any way. I really want the book published - or else I can't sell it to raise money for --. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Wow.
Firstly, this is such a wonderful idea and I hope you feel extremely proud of yourself for starting something that could be such a positive attribute for teenagers.
1) In my opinion, teen stories and advice "sum it all up," but you could add little features like the links to different websites and hotlines that are easy access for teens.
2) I'm not quite sure to help you financially, but I aswell, live in Canada and am more than willing to find a copy for myself. Also, could you set it up so that the book is available to buy online? Like within a website so it's accessible for teens in other countries.
I hope you the best with this project. It's a great book going towards a great cause.
Thank you so much for posting this.
It made my day.
Also, if you have any further questions or would like to discuss some possibilities, please do not hesitate to PM me.

Thanks Mikey. Yeah, I was considering making e-versions of it to start with. I plan to sell it, like I said, at the banquet that is held in November. I'm just not sure if a CD is the best way to sell it.

I have no problems selling it online. I actually have my own website so that wouldn't be a problem or anything. It's just that I know I could make a ton of money at this particular banquet because many rich people attend this event!

Err, another thing: Do you think I should have a section where I answer like general questions that teenagers may have?

Ex:

"My parents always yell at me. What can I do?"

"My grades are slipping. I don't know why. I'm a failure."

And then I like...answer them?

Do you have anything in your book about teen pregnancy? Because that is becoming more and more common.

I actually don't. I don't know anyone who is a teen mother - which makes it difficult to gain experience on.

Wow what a great project to start! I hope this can pull through.

I like your idea with the questions and answers.
Maybe you could have chapters of issues that teens face
then have sub-chapters with the questions and then you can answer them.
or
You could do set up interviews with teens and put them under different issues. Find teens willing to talk about what they have been through, ask them questions and publish it.
or
You could ask for teen stories dealing with their issues, and have it just like that.

Personally out of the three options I like the interview one the best.

You could also interview like counsellors, teachers, or doctors that have to deal with these teens issues, ask them how they go through with the procedures, how do they comfort the teen, how do they deal with the parents, etc. It will give teens if they read it a good sense of what to expect when they find them self in a situation where an adult is needed.

Issues that I can think of are like the forums here: Substance Abuse, Abuse, Rape, Teen Motherhood/Fatherhood, Self Harm, Depression, Suicide, Bullying, Sexuality, etc.

I think the best way to help get this published is to ask for donations from like organizations that offer help and support to Teens dealing with these issues. Spread your idea around.

I really hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your help. Do you think it would be a decent idea if in every chapter, I included both interviews AND a FAQ type advice thing?

My sister is a teen mother and we are really close so I saw what she went through and is still going through (she has a 1 year old daughter now)
and I would be MORE than happy to tell you about it and answer any questions you have and give suggestions if you want to add teen pregnancy to the books.

You're welcome.
I think answering general questions would be a great addition, aslong as you have knowledgeable and helping answers/information.
If there's a topic that your not quite as familiar with, I know their are people on this site, including myself, who are more than willing to help answer your questions.
Ex; The most common situations for me are self-harm and depression.
Just keep an eye out for certian threads and members who/that would most likely answer some of your questions.
Agian, Good luck.

This is a wonderful idea.

What about some poetry or drawings by teens, scattered throughout the pages? Also, try Googling an independent Publisher near where you are.Or contacting an agency that publishes books. If nothing else, they can tell you what you need to do to get it published.

Good luck with this project.

That is such a terrific idea!

You could always phone up different publishing companies and tell them what you're doing. Sometimes if they know it's for charity they will pay for it either completely, or at least partially. You could also phone up other companies of all types and ask them to sponsor you. I've done it plenty of times for school, on a smaller scale mind you. Just write a letter up, or talk to them directly, explaining your idea and asking for a contribution. In return you just put their company logo on a page in the back of the book or whatever.

Where there's a will there's a way! I'm sure you can do this if you want. It may be a rather big task though. It might be easier and more efficient if you get a few people together in your community to work on this. Plus, more people means more connections and the more likely you are to get funding.

Whatever you choose to do, best of luck! And don't let setbacks get you down.

Re: Is this even possible? - June 26th 2009, 02:45 PM

thats a brilliant idea, there is a publishing company where you can order them online and then they publish them as and when they are needed, i'm a total spaz atm and can't remember what it's called but my school used it a few times to publish charity books i'm just totally blanking on the name

but if you look around and even phone up indie publishing groups to tell them maybe you could get like reduced prices and stuff people are pretty good about charities and it gives them really good publicity
