Smile Music Notation Composers. - December 5th 2009, 12:41 AM

Please take the poll(see bottom of this post), even if you have NO IDEA what I'm talking about. Thanks

Okay, so I've got Finale 2009, and it's good. It's my 2nd music notation composer. My first was NotationComposer, I really liked NotationComper the best, for some reason. I've upgraded to Sibelius 6, and it's alright.

Here are my reviews (pros & cons):

PROS- Easy to use, cheap, and can get it for free. Really fast, doesn't take much memory up. Quick note entry, easy set up. Easy MIDI set-up compatibility. Easy toolbar, add meas., delete meas., and add/edit staff(s).

CONS- Can't put multiple rhythm patterns in it and it's a pain the have to select every accidental, even though it should stay the same. Horrible percussion instrument selection...instruments sound fake and computer generated. Really hard to add in mult. measure rests-quarter/eight/16th/32nd/etc.

PROS- Easy, cheap, quick note entry. Low memory, and decent instrument selection. Can mute staff(s). Have automatic transcribe feature. Supports MIDIs. Nice flute sounds. Horrible high clarinet pitches. Nice mallet percussion sounds.

CONS- Doesn't support all basics of music theory (can't compose/record advanced rhythymic patterns). Can't write multiple parts on one staff. Horrible upper battery percussion sounds.

PROS- LIVE TEMPO. Easy document set-up. Lighting fast. Functional recording, and tap-tempo feature. Best woodwind and brass sounds, best selection in percussion section/concert symphonic.

CONS- Live tempo is innacurrate, if you don't have the equipment for it. Can't switch off tempos. Can't play 16th/32nd note rolls on marching snare/tenors. Non-distinct notes on all marching battery percussion (basses/tenors). Starts with only a few measures/staff(s). Have to manually add them.

Please take the poll in the following order:
Do you know of any other music notation composers (good ones)?
(Yes -explain-/No)

Which ones have you used?
What do you look for in a good Composer (software)?
(Good sounds/selection/Ease of use/Price/Other-explain-)
Are you able to read music? How well?
(Not at all/Yes, and some/Yes, very well)
Can you play an instrument?
(Yes-which one(s)?-/No)
