I sleep with a nightlight on at 18..

I don't think it's anything to be embarassed about, LOADS of people are scared of the dark. I'm 16 and I still sleep with a lamp on at night because I'm scared of the dark too!

I don't think there is anything wrong with sleeping with a light on at any age. It's perfectly okay to make yourself more comfortable when falling asleep. I personally can't fall asleep unless my feet are touching and my boyfriend can't sleep without some sort of background noise :P Unless your fear of the dark is negatively impacting your life or keeping you from getting out and doing things you want to do, then I don't think you should worry about it too much. There's nothing wrong with this at all! I'm 16 and I sleep with a nightlight on. I'm sure that in 2 years I'll still sleep with one. Don't worry about being abnormal because I know that many others use one as well.

Although it's not the dark I'm afraid of I have to have a light outside of my room on and I have to leave my door open coz I have a fear of burglars so I like to be able to see everything as soon as I leave my bedroom.

Some people are afraid of the dark and there's nothing wrong with that. If you feel really concious about it maybe try leaving the door open and a light on outside or having the night light on for a while and then having someone come and turn it off for you and slowly wein yourself off it?

I won't even walk down a dark hallway... it scares the living crap out of me, but it doesn't make me any less human.

Don't worry about it. There are plenty of other people who do. Nothing to be ashamed of. Being scared of the dark is as legitimate a fear as being scared of spiders or snakes or flying.

I use a night light too. If there's too much light I can't fall asleep, but if there's too little then it freaks me out. So you're not the only one. I don't see anything wrong with it either, and I wouldn't worry about it! It's really no big deal.

The reason i have a fear of the dark is becouse when i was young i saw this animated war film, it really disturbed me to the point where i couldent sleep without any lights on in my Room.

I am 17 now and have a nightlight outside of my room. It's not for me, it's for my sister(our rooms are side by side) but if it wasn't there, I'd ask for one I'm sre. I am scared of the dark as well. I stil sleep with my teddy I got after my surgery, and my music on because I hate the dark, and the silence night brings... but theres nothing wrong with sleeping with a nightlight, I'm sure there are more peoople who do then they lead on

I am 21 and I still sleep with this little pooh pillow that iv had since I was a little kid. Lots think its cute, and some think its just weird. Honestly I cant sleep without it like even on my bed. I freak out if I cant find it. Its the only thing really left from my child hood, thats probably why. But still I mean we all have our own little "necessitates" I want to call them, but thats not the right word. But its not bad.. everyone does it or did it..

I'm almost 23 and I don't like sleeping in the dark.
My two year old son shares a room with me and my husband, and he wont go to sleep without his night light on... so luckily for me, there's always a little light :P

Don't feel embarrassed. I am almost 22 and I sleep with a night light on also. But mostly the reason for that is because my Cockatiel is more afraid of the dark than I am.
He sleeps in my room with me, and when it was really dark and without a night light on all night, he sometimes would freak out and fly around in his cage and wake me up, freak me out also. So now I keep a light on so if he has a bad dream he can see me in my bed, and it's not so dark so he won't get scared.

I have to sleep with a light on unless my boyfriend is there. And my fear of the dark gets worse if I've seen a particularly scary Criminal Minds or Medium episode. I know that I should just stop watching them, but I enjoy them too much .

i quite like the dark, but i have a friend who likes a night light on, but if shes round mine or im sleeping round hers she can sleep in the dark, she says its because when shes in her room at night alone she feels scared but if shes in her room with someone else at night or in a room round someone else house with them at night she does not mind the dark. i would say if you feel safe with the light on it is ok. i dont sleep with a night light on i sleep in the dark, but im going to be twenty soon and i still sleep with a blanket - its more a rag now, ive had the blanket since i was born, i also take a soft toy to bed with me (tigger). if i go to a friends house i have a small cuddly bear i take with me (beany babie bear). i can't sleep without having something like a soft toy in bed with me, my family all tease me about it, and ask me when im gona throw out the blanket. i dont see why we should stop doing something that makes us feel safe at night just because others want us to. i used to be scared of the dark, up to when i was about 12 years old i had a dimmer switch so i dimmed down the light and slept with that on.

I'm 21 and depending on the location. I still need a light on. Two summers ago I had an apartment to myself in a bad neighborhood - I could not go to sleep with most of the lights on because I was beyond terrified of someone breaking in.

When I'm at home. I absolutely need a light on. My TV light (same difference), but because my house was haunted and specifically targeted me over the years. Cold spots. Feelings of being watched. Shadow people. Whole ten yards, my high school experience mirrored that of the teen in 'Haunting in Connecticut' (documentary) in those regards... so, more ghost protection. I found it amazing that that family stumbled onto 'light wards off ghosts' too - thought that bit was just in my head.

Anyways, nothing wrong with it. Adds safety precautions if anything.

fear in general has no age limit, dont be embarassed. my boyfriend has a fear of the dark but its because of his past he was abused every night. maybe a memory is linked?

I hope you're not feeling too embarrassed now - it seems as though a lot of people still sleep with some kind of night light on! I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed of and it is probably more common than you think, just it's not something that we talk about often. Personally, I don't sleep with a nightlight usually, but if I do feel vunerable or upset, I know that sleeping with a light on can give me a little bit of reassurance, and that's okay. Bedtime is your time and it's up to you what you do. If you really feel bad about this, have you tried reducing the light, bit by bit? It could help you to stop sleeping with a light on.

Hey, as you've seen, loads of people still sleep with lights and other things! I bet a lot of your peers do as well, even if they wouldn't admit to it! Personally, I've begun to sleep with a lava lamp again, I also sleep the wrong way round on my bed, I can't sleep without music of some kind as I can't stand the silence, I often sleep in my Dads old fleece as it helps me feel less alone, and I have 3 teddies, one of which I HAVE to old in my hand or I can't sleep! I also have a hot water bottle for when I'm feeling really low or it's cold! So everyone has their own little quirks and their own little ways to help them sleep and you shouldn't be ashamed of using a nightlight!
