Question Just wondering? - July 2nd 2011, 03:40 PM

So I wasn't sure if I should put this here or in family...? If it needs to be moved then thanks in advance to whoever does that!

I was just curious if you hide TeenHelp from your parents or not? I know that it has the panic button specifically for that reason (I have mine enabled but my parents know about me using the site).

My dad at one point said that I don't need this website because there are a lot of people out there more messed up than I am and I should realize how well off I am (of course, this was before they found out about the self harm!)

So yeah, just curious if you do hide it and why?

I do hide it, because my parents know nothing!
And what, may I ask, is panic button? <3

It's this thing you can activate so that if someone walks into the room and you don't want them to see this button shows up at the top right hand and then on every post you're reading.

It takes you to a set page that you get to choose, it's quite nifty! Although my parents know about the site so there's seemingly no point to me having one, it works in case my brother or sister are being nosy. (:

I'm trying to remember where I set it... Hm.

I've never really found a reason to hide it. I use my computer in front of my parents quite frequently and they must have glanced at me on TH sooner or later, but they've never brought it up. I haven't either. I suppose it just isn't a very big deal for us.

Re: Just wondering? - July 2nd 2011, 09:18 PM

The only reason my parents ever had a problem with it was when my counselor told them that certain things on here could trigger something for me.

I then explained that most things don't actually trigger me.. So it's all fine now! I just thought it was kind of interesting that there is a panic button for the specific purpose to hide the site from your parents/sibling/whoever.

And we try to keep triggering content labelled as such to make TH a safe place for everyone.

I don't hide it. I did in the beginning, but this site ended up making a really big impact on me and I wanted to share what I was doing with my family. My mom thinks it's great that I want to help people like this. My dad and sister don't seem to care much either way. So it's not an issue for me.

You can set it under Edit Options, found in your User CP. Do Ctrl+F and search for "Panic Button." It'll bring you down to where you can activate it.

My mother knows, and mildly disapproves, but it's not a huge deal. I don't go out of my way to hide the fact I'm on here so much, but I don't draw attention to it either.

No, my parents definitely don't know about it. My Mum is pretty computer savvy, so I think if she knew she'd try to get on here to see what I write. It's a bunch of stuff she doesn't know, so it'd be awkward and weird for me haha. I don't really use the panic button even though I have it activated. I have my own laptop that no one else uses, so I don't have to worry too much

No my parents don't know for several reasons. One, I am on this site thru my iPod which they don't know I get on the Internet on my iPod. I'm "not allowed". Psh. If they knew I was I'd be in DEEP trouble. Two, they would highly disapprove of me doing anything like this. My mom would force me to show her what I've posted and a lot of what I've posted she doesn't know about or it's about her. So that would never go over well. I have the panic button enabled tho usually I'll just lock my iPod if my parents walk in. Once I get a laptop I won't care cause I'm open to my friends about the site.

They don't necessarily have to keep it confidential if the patient is a minor and at a serious risk of injury, or anything else to that effect.

I'm curious, because I don't really understand it at all: if you're on here for something other than problems that stem from your parents, why would your parents be upset or worried that you're on the site (other than with triggering material of course)? I don't really see why getting help from peers and people with experience would be a bad thing. If I had a son or daughter who had a problem with a detrimental habit or relationships, I'd encourage him/her to come here.

Re: Just wondering? - July 4th 2011, 07:46 PM

Are you asking me specifically?

As for the thing with the counselor, my parents already kind of knew that I'd been on a website because our computer is in the kitchen and they'd walk by and ask what I was doing and I told them that I was on a website for teenagers/young adults that needed help with problems.

I was asking why someone would hide it because it seems like a lot of people's parents don't know about the problems they're posting about most of the time.

Thanks for the answers everyone. (:

I was mainly just asking everyone in general.

I can understand why parents might be upset or young adults secretive about the site if they're coming for problems that the parents aren't aware of, but what about for those to which this doesn't apply? I see why, even if the problem is evident to the parents, the kid might not want to tell them about this site -- but I don't understand why parents would be upset that their child is receiving help from his/her peers.

Oh heck no. My mom would say it's "unsafe" even though it is really safe on here. In her mind every website you could possibly sign up for isn't safe. Which could be true for some sites, but I don't visit those. xD
I didn't know about this panic button. It seems pretty nifty.

My mum never checks up on what sites I use. However she does know about Teen Help and is all for it. She tried getting me into therapy earlier in the year but I just couldn't tell my therapist anything. Then I found this site and shes seen how much happier I am.

Re: Just wondering? - July 6th 2011, 07:50 AM

My parents have seen me on the site several times but didn't care and I've told them I use forum and chat websites when they inquired a while ago. Unlike other users I don't post anything on here I'm uncomfortable with sharing in-person and to my family so it doesn't matter when my parents look at the site while I'm on it. Besides, my father uses forums and chats from other sites and he doesn't care if I see the screen while he's on it.

I feel if there is something I'm incredibly uncomfortable with and feel I need to say it, my parents will eventually know of it or inquire if they see I'm not my usual self, so instead of beating around the bush with them, I just tell them and we work out it. That isn't to say I don't keep secrets from them because those secrets are not uncomfortable for me so I leave them be. I don't say these secrets on TH because generally the secrets are from trusted friends and I keep my word by not spewing it to a bunch of strangers.

dont listen to your dad, yes their are people out there more messed up then you are. But it doesnt mean something isnt wrong with you. you guys want to hide from your parents. Some secrets are worth revealing. Many wont understand a lot of it at first. But youll notice you don thave to hide around. Ive been a cutter since i was in the 6th grade im attending college this year. I havent cut for a little over a year now. But trust me being open is easier.

There's nothing wrong with feeling like you can trust people, even if you don't know them. Sometimes I need to come here because if I told a friend how I felt about a certain thing they would look at me like I was crazy. Some people literally can't tell their parents about their problems and they need this website.

My parents know everything, whatever I post here is usually an extension of what I've told them. There's nothing wrong with wanting to reach out to people in a similar situation and ask for help. That's what the website is for, to give and get advice on what's going on. If no one needed advice, there would be no point to this website.

Anyways, thanks for the answers everyone! (:

I hide it with my life, when my mum saw some teenhelp stuff on my email she asked to see the site and I paniced loads and it was horrible. The name of the site means it is a bit obvious what it is for and I don't want mother to know at all... I use the panic button a lot and have it connected to tetrisfriends Xxx

I don't hide it really, but I don't talk about it either. I'm sure my mom has seen this site pulled up before though.
Sometimes I randomly talk about the people I'm close to on here and my friends give me weird looks because they have no idea who it is. One of my friends knows I get on some type of website, but I didn't give her the name.

I don't hide it, although I told them I only come on to help people as opposed to talk about my problems because I'd feel odd with them reading what my day to day problems are.

Yes, it's that simple.

I always hide it. My mother doesn't know about any of my problems and doesn't want to know, but if she found it she would call it overreacting and say I didn't need it, or I should talk to her if things are bothering me, even though she doesn't listen to me. I don't want that confrontation, not yet, so I keep it hidden.

My mom was excited when she heard I was volunteering and was like "well I think we should've been told before you applied!" and then when I told her what it is I do she asked how I knew what to say and how to help..

Which I wondered too hahaha. I guess I'm doing something right though! I don't exactly hide it, only if they walk in when I'm typing something personal about me.

(Thanks again for all the replies guys!)

My mum probably knows that there's this site that I go on, may have walked past the computer a few times and briefly seen it. Though it is hard trying to explain who you're meeting at TH meets! It's like"errmm, just some people" I think she knows that I meet a few people online.
I wouldn't be too bothered if she actually asked, its just the risk of her coming here and try to find out who I am and whatnot.
She reacted bad to me being on a different forum before, but I guess I was 12/13 and it was mainly for self harm. Dont think it should bother her now though, i'm 19!

Even though I have the panic button, I try to hide TeenHelp from my parents. If they walk into the room, I'll quickly flip to a different tab. They don't know what's going on inside my mind and I don't want them to yell at me. xD

I do hide it.
When my parents found out about the self harm and depression and stuff, they freaked and took me away from all my friends....and this site.
The only time i can even come on here is when i'm at my grandma's houe so i can use her computer.
I love this site and all the people on here....I just have to hide it from my parents or they'd freak and yell at me.

I actually was part of the staff on here once upon a time, then the site crashed down, and people had to make new things. I occasionally mentioned that I did an online-counselling type of thing, but I've never given anybody the website.

I don't exactly hide it because my dad knows about the site but I still have to use the panic button when I am talking to someone, or posting personal things.
