Lightbulb I have phone issues. - July 11th 2011, 05:18 AM

What the title says.

So I pick up the phone to call someone about something (just random talking or gossip or planning for some occasion or whatnot). Immediately after I hear the first ring, my mind draws a complete and utter blank. I talk, yeah, but barely. I feel like I'm a floundering, inarticulate, dumb person every time I so much as touch a phone.

Seriously, this is awful. It's come to the point where I won't answer calls even from members of my family -- other than my grandparents and my parents. I won't call anyone. I will not voluntarily enter into an over the phone conversation. People give me their phone numbers? I don't call them, because I hate phones. Despise them.

People ask why I don't have a cell phone. Honestly? Because I hate to talk on my phone. At all.

Why is this coming up all of a sudden? Well, my boyfriend and I have been talking over Facebook since summer started, as he knows how I am with phones. His computer went all spazzy and everything, and now we can't talk on the Internet. And because I knew I'd miss him and regret it if I didn't, I gave him my phone number and told him to call me tomorrow evening because my dad was in bed -- while this was true, I knew that I was just trying to put off the inevitable phone conversation.

Which I don't even understand. My boyfriend and I talk all the time, and we get along really well. Our longest running conversation lasted from 5:00 in the evening until 1:30-something the next morning. I don't know why I'm nervous. I just hate phones, and now I'm going to have to talk over the phone. Shit.

Help, anyone?

I myself have a problem with talking on phones, mainly because on phones, that's ALL the other person can focus on, since they cannot see you, and so there is more pressure on being articulate and not sounding awkward or silly etc.

Only advice I can give you is that it's your boyfriend, and so you should not feel uncomfortable talking to him since if he's dating you, he's not going to judge you over little things like this. Plus he already knows you are uncomfortable about it, so he will perfectly understand if you sound a bit uncomfortable. I myself find phone conversations get less and less uncomfortable as the conversation goes on due to prolonged exposure, give it a good 5-10 minutes and I'm sure it'll get much better. Hope this helped

edit: just noticed this post was from yesterday morning, in which case this might of been late, oh well

Yes, it's that simple.

Life for you has been less than kind
So take a number, stand in line
We've all been sorry, we've all been hurt
But how we survive is what makes us who we are.

And the day pressed on like crushing weights,
For no man does it ever wait.
