Overcharged at Store - September 12th 2011, 01:31 AM

My boyfriend used his credit card to pay for 2 items at the pet store tonight. A few hours later he looked at the receipt and they charged us $9.99 extra becuase they scanned one item twice.

Is there anything we can do about it? I'm calling tomorrow, but I want to know if there is anything extra we can do to help us get our money back...

Just take the receipt to the store if its still open saying how you got charged twice. Also calling ahead doesnt hurt any.

I hate when the stores do that. I always check my receipt before I leave any store - for that reason. It really all depends on the store and what their "policy" is. But I would take back the item with you and politely say "You charged me twice for this one item and I'd like a refund on what I never bought." If they say they don't believe you or they "can't" do that. Unfortunately I'm not really familiar with the law so I'm not sure what you can do from there... I guess you'd just have to deal with spending $9.99 on absolutely nothing, which is extremely unfortunate and the stupid cashier's fault.

That's what I figured. I'll call tomorrow for a manager and see what they say. I have the cashier's name and all, though I doubt they will remember us. But it can't hurt to tell them who it was and the time and what we look like, etc.

It was probably just a human mistake the casher probably didn't mean to charge you more, just take the receipt and also your other things you purchased and tell them what happened I'm sure they won't make a big deal out of $10.
Good Luck.

Like the others have said just call or go up there. They should be willing to work with you. I used to work at a groccery store and it does happen. Sometimes the cashier would ring it up twice on accident or the actual prize of the object would be prized wrong in the computer. People would just come in with the reciept and explain the situation and then the manager would give there money back. No big deal.

Re: Overcharged at Store - September 12th 2011, 12:17 PM

I had a woman call at work yesterday and complain because the cashier charged her an extra $9.99 because, "The cashier must have thought that each shin guard was $9.99 but it was $9.99 for the pair," so she really made herself sound like an ass because it was just a silly double-scan.
Please make sure when you do call or go in, that you are a little more kind about it. "It seems the cashier accidentally double charged us," sounds a lot nicer than, "The idiot cashier..." Just a tip.

But yes, definitely call/go in. They should be able to give you your money back without a problem. They may process it as a return without you returning anything. That's how we usually do it at my store.

Oh, I was kind I know those things can happen, I've done it multiple times lol

I just said "Hi, I have a question. An item was scanned twice yesterday and we caught it last night. Is there anything you can do?" And she said as long as I bring the receipt in we can get a refund.

Woo. So this can be closed now. Thank you all for the help!

In addition to going in politely, if the store manager (or whoever you talk to) doesn't believe you, ask them to check their cameras because stores, especially large ones, have cameras monitoring the registers.

All you can really do is call up the store and go down there. Explain the situation fully, and be honest. That's all you can do. If they give you you're money back, then that's great! But if they don't, you're shit out of ten dollars. It sucks a little, but what can you do? Good luck. :]
