Am I the only one? - December 11th 2011, 08:28 PM

I really don't like christmas. It seems so fake and commercialised. I'm not excited at all. This year I plan on working until 3, going to see my little brother for a few hours and then going home to my cold, miserable flat and drinking myself into oblivion. It's such a stressful time of year for me because I don't have the money to buy anyone anything nice. My mum asked for a can opener this year because she knows I have no money. What kind of a gift is that?? I could quite easily go without christmas. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Re: Am I the only one? - December 11th 2011, 08:41 PM

To be honest, I couldn't care less about it. I just put up the tree with my mom today, and not even she is in the Christmas spirit. The one up side to everything is that I never am able to buy anyone anything because I have no money simply because of no job, but this year I was able to buy my sister a gift that I think she'll like, and it made me pretty proud. I guess the real meaning of Christmas, though, is not the gifts, so I'd try to enjoy all the time that you have with your little brother or other family members if I were you. You are right that it is commercialized but the real meaning of Christmas is spending time with your loved ones, not the gifts. The meaning just got a bit lost with the big businesses trying to push deals on everyone.

Yeah, I took my little brother to the theatre last night as his main present, and he's got something little to unwrap on the day, but seeing him excited is the closest I get to feeling any sort of "christmas spirit". I feel like scrooge

I've never celebrated Christmas so I don't really care for it one way or the other. However, I'm around little kids a lot, and it bothers me that they are all being callously lied to.

No you're not the only one. I feel the exact same way. I am only looking forward to the christmas dinner, not really the family...

Eh, I could really care less about the presents. I'm just looking forward to the dinner on Christmas day and spending a bit of time with my family. But I would much rather be hanging out online.

No more so than being "lied to" by watching a children's movie without informing the child every scene is fake. No more so than playing a game of pretend. The concept of "Santa Claus" is all in good spirit.

Yes, good spirit indeed.

Except that Santa Claus knows if you've been bad or good. He knows when you're sleeping and he knows when you're awake. Cartoon villains look benign compared to a old man who can watch you at all times and is allowed into your house.

I find it disgusting that one would tell a child this, espcially since children take these things so literally. To them, Santa Claus can see you at all times, whether you're being a brat or going to the bathroom. And that is just messed up.

This is exactly why my parents ended up telling me he didn't exist at a comparatively young age; I started obsessing over burglars - I mean if "Father Christmas" could get in when everyone was asleep, then surely anyone else could, right?

Anyways, I'm not that enthused about the festive season either.

Actually, that is an interesting opinion, however I don't feelt many 6-year-olds would truly understand the sexual implications, and it is really the same as the tooth fairy, or any other whimsical childish fun.

At the end of the day though, you have your opinions, I have mine.

I never did like Christmas. I remember when I was about five or six years old, we grew up very poor and our parents were flat out honest and told us Santa is not going to be coming to our house. Ever since then I hated Christmas.

Re: Am I the only one? - December 12th 2011, 06:50 AM

My household still "celebrates" Christmas, despite every single one of us holding different beliefs of god and such. My mom is actually the only Christian in the house right now. I'm an Atheist, but I help her put up the tree anyway because I know it makes her happy. And if she's happy, I'm happy.

Obviously the religious aspect of it has greatly deteriorated in our family over the years, but right now I just think of it as a time to really appreciate my family and what I have. The gifts and time spent with one another are just a couple ways that we show this. It feels good to give things to people you care about, doesn't it?

Christmas is what you make of it. Yeah it is commercialised, there's no denying that. But if you're willing to look, there's much more to it than that.

Are you kidding me? As much as I hate Christmas no child was ever scarred because of Santa Claus. Callous? Disgusting?

My God, could you be more melodramatic?

Well, I did avoid using the word rape... I think that shows a lot of restraint, for this site. Come on now, you're on TH. Can't we go one thread without pointing how lopsided someone's wording is?

I really can't stand christmas. The fact that it comes earlier and earlier every year, the "its supposed to be a happy time of year so lets pretend that we all love each other when we don't". I'm so indecisive, that buying gifts is almost impossible for me, so I panic the whole time.

I don't really care about christmas either. The religious aspect of it is out the window for me, and we always have to have more than one christmas due to the fact that my grandmother hates two of her sons.
What's the point of christmas if you won't even allow your whole family to be a part of it? Isn't it supposed to be that time of year where everyone puts away their differences and comes together? Hah yeaah right -.-
Christmas just feels like another day to me. I do enjoy giving gifts to my family though..

I like Christmas Everything seems so much happier and there are more sparkly things around, which is awesome.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

Normally, I love Christmas. And I still like all the sparkles and the lights, and our Christmas tree is cute

But this year, and last year... I just don't really care. I'm not excited at all. And I'm a bit annoyed I'm not excited, because I used to love loving Christmas, if that makes sense?

i hate christmas too, it's so frustrating and stressful, because it's supposed to be this magical time of year when everyone gets along and it's all about family and being together and happiness, etc. and my family can't go five minutes without some explosive argument. the whole holiday season just sucks. and now my dad moved out, and he's taking my older sister with him it looks like, so now it's like only half my family celebrating, which is just sad. and then my mom asks, "what do you want to make christmas special?" and i'll say some gift, and she'll say it's too expensive because now we're broke, so i'll just blow up and "say forget it! i don't care, do whatever you want!" and she'll get mad at me for not trying to make it a "special holiday"

fuck christmas, it's just another day of the year that's just extra disappointing because of the extra high expectations.

oh and then having to answer to everyone who asks "how was your christmas?" and it's either lie and put on a fake smile and say, "great! how was yours?" or just flat out say, "it was crap, i don't feel like explaining why, can we just forget about christmas?" but who wants to be a debby downer right?

Christmas can be pretty stressful and expensive. I spent way to much money on Christmas and I was really lucky I could afford it. I do think that it is made to be a little too much about the presents these days and not enough about family and Jesus the very reason we have Christmas in the first place. A lot of people are forgetting the true meaning and that's sad to me. It is supposed to be the time of year when everyone gets together and relaxes and thinks about all the good things in life not rushing around like a chicken with it's head cut off and spending money left right and center. Despite all that I always love Christmas and this year is no different for me. I have been ready since the beginning of November . I do understand where you are coming from though.

I went through a phase where I absolutely hated Christmas. Didn't want anything to do with it. But as I got of that phase I found I didn't mind it so much anymore. I'm not one of those people that goes gaga over it, but I do find it fun to plan presents and decorate things and the like.

I really do like Christmas, but I have friends who don't. You're definitely not the only one who doesn't like it as it's actually pretty common for people to be indifferent about certain holidays. Hope this helped.

I dislike the whole commercial side of Christmas. I hate the adverts on TV about all the gifts when some people have no money or are starving. I hate Christmas dinner and all the food that's unnecessarily consumed. Also, this time of year makes me feel incredibly anxious.

But I love the religious side of it. I'm a Christian, and this afternoon I'll be looking after a bunch of children while their parents go carol singing in old people's homes and wrap presents for people, and other stuff. That makes me happy. I love that I've got my family presents that I know they'll love. I can't wait to see their faces when they open them. I love how excited my little sister is about Christmas and how happy she is.

I think there are good and bad parts of Christmas, but for me I think, at least this year, the good outweighs the bad.
