Signs of improvement! -
February 6th 2010, 10:16 AM
Lately I've been working on my own cognitive-behavioral therapy in order to get over social anxiety. So far it's been going pretty well and I've been hanging out with people more and generally just getting out there. A few things have happened that I'm quite happy about:
The other day I walked by some girls my age and they were giggling to each other. When I got home I realized that I didn't automatically think, "They were laughing at me. I must have looked ridiculous. There must have been something wrong with my hair/clothes/etc." I had ignored it! I mean, of course I acknowledged that it was being done at the time. When reading up on social anxiety, I read some information that said those with social anxiety usually don't do well with constructive criticism and they immediately think negatively about it. I realized, though, that after posting a story online that I had written, someone commented telling me that I should have made a piece of information more clear in order not to confuse people. Instead of thinking, "I officially suck at writing and I'll never do it again. I just embarrassed myself in front of whoever is reading this." I thought, "I agree. Next time I'll emphasize that point." Today, I have a test and tons of people will be there, so I have been wary, but I'm confident with these newly discovered revelations. Today's going to be a good day. Waitin' for my ruca.
