UK Teenager Saved By A US Teenager...Via Facebook. - April 4th 2009, 10:19 PM

Quote:
UK teenager 'saved by Facebook'

A British teenager who took a drugs overdose has been saved after the American girl he was chatting to online raised the alarm.
The 16-year-old boy from Oxfordshire had sent her a message suggesting he intended to commit suicide.
Although she did not know where he lived, calls via the White House and the British Embassy enabled Abingdon police to save the boy's life.
The boy, who has not been named, made a full recovery after hospital treatment.
Still conscious
It is believed that he was using the social networking site late on Wednesday night and sent a private message to a girl in Maryland saying that he was going to harm himself.
She told her mother, who called local police.
The police called a "special agent" at the White House, the British Embassy in Washington and finally the police control room in Abingdon.
Staff narrowed down his location to eight possible addresses, and officers found the teenager at the fourth house they tried. He had taken an overdose, but was still conscious.

I'm impressed by this girl and her mother's quick thinking. I would have (and have done, to be honest) the same thing. I hope the boy is okay and gets proper help.

I didn't think people would care that much, especially authorities from another country! I would've thought that they'd take it as a prank.

A situation extremely similar to this actually happened to someone in my family, and she saved someone's life who she had met in some kind of chat room and became good friends with over the internet. I think it's so great that people actually form friendships like that with people that they meet online. It really proves that the internet isn't just full of a bunch of creeps, but people who can amount to great friends as well.

I'm amazed the White House actually got involved in something this petty. Also, it seems a bit odd that if someone wanted to overdose that they'd randomly tell someone on Facebook. However, the girl possesses something that too few people nowadays possess: intelligence.

It doesn't suggest it was completely random. They were friends on facebook so they knew each other somehow, and it's completely plausible that one was trying to help the other through a bad time.

I'm amazed at this girl. Such quick thinking on both her and her mother's part. To think, they're an ocean apart but she still saved his life!

They knew each other on facebook, and the girl obviously cared enough to call it in. And even if you're sceptic about my choice of using the word "care", she obviously had a reason for believing his statement to hold enough weight to report it. From that, I infer that she knew him or had at least spoken to him enough to think that it's real.

I have a question: does this set a legal precedent or some sort? Given that government agencies in both the US and UK responded to this, can their failure to respond in a similar fashion for a similar situation become something like negligence perhaps?

What in that sentence implies that she didn't which country he lives in.

I'll quote the article yet again:

Quote:
she did not know where he lived
You haven't answered my question: Where in the article does it say they knew each other? You simply answered with "they knew each other" then left it at that. I want you to show me where in the article it says that.

OK, so if I were to go to someone at campus, say, a professor or a student and tell them really convingly that I want to kill myself, then according to your logic, they'd report it because they knew who I was. What if they had absolutely no clue who I was, then they wouldn't? That seems to be your logic that you're using.

As for the legal part, it could be viewed either as negligence or as giving someone special treatment.

Let's calm down a bit here, please.

I think that's awesome, on all parts. Well, except for the boy, that was a kind of dumb thing. But good on the girl and her mother and for both governments.

It's good to see people question things said. Most people don't.

Nightmare, I think it's simply implied - though you may be right, the article suggests they knew each other when saying;

Quote:
The 16-year-old boy from Oxfordshire had sent her a message suggesting he intended to commit suicide.
At least when I see that, I assume that the girl would not have been worried enough to call the police, simply thinking it was a prank or something.

And there are people who are quite conscious of who they're telling what about where they live. And it doesn't say that she didn't know the country of where he lived, it just says she didn't know where he lived. Which could mean, like I know most of you guys, I know the general area where you live, but I couldn't find your house.
