This is especially true if you are one of the many people who suffer from depression and other problems and either:

a) don't talk about it as if it makes you interestng

b) deal with it in an acceptable way
So it's okay for a teacher to stoop to the kid's level? Regardless of whatever the kid did, it didn't make what the teacher did okay.
Plus, as I've mentioned before, what affect did this have on OTHER kids who self harm in that class? That ARENT showing it off.

I don't think everyone should worry about following social rules, and I think that's the least of the problem with this whole situation.

An eight grade suicidal kid is going to take something like that to heart. And what if there was another suicidal kid in the class? What if the lack of respect for this kid, pushed some other kid over the edge?

What that teacher did was completely and utterly WRONG. You don't joke about something like that. And why not? Because it's not FUNNY.
I'm glad you posted this, it's exactly how I feel except I wouldn't have been able to put it into words.

But in this case the teacher has just told the boy to go and cut deeper, surely that would make the boy feel like he's not wanted alive so would probably make him more inclined to think nobody else does?

No I get that I do and I did say the the teacher saying it was wrong. The timing was wrong and unless this teacher has an unusually close relationship with this student the person saying it was wrong.

If i'd have been a kid in that class who also had cutting problems, I would have been angry about the other kid showing off, and probably would have told him something similar to what the teacher said.

this says it all...i can't even understand how this could even possibly have been misunderstood or taken out of context...even if he was joking you shoulnt EVER "joke" about suicide

he should have been fired or in the very least susspended without pay for a year or more ..... gah people just have no common sence these days...

stupid teachers who think or rather DON'T think before they say something that could hurt a student should not be payed for a year and have to take some class to teach them to STFU or auctually try or pretend in the very least that they care

i know this is a ramble and prob just doesnt make sence but this stuff just gets under my skin
