So what do YOU think of evolution? - May 10th 2009, 08:04 PM

So, what do you think of evolution? Is it real? Is it fake? Did the deity of your religion intend for it to happen? Tell me what you think, I intend for this to turn in to a debate, I don't plan for everyone to gang up on everyone either. I also know that threads like this have been made before, but I wanted a current one and as far as I know their aren't any open, but if I'm still breaking a rule trash it.

Any way, these two picture show my opinion on the matter

I believe that it happened, and is still happening, and not just with living being, I mean, it's kind of like evolution when technology improves. I believe in evolution because of all the scientific evidence, and the lack of any other evidence there is for it, so, your opinions?

EDIT!
The pictures are being used as an example, like a symbol, they're used throughout the bible (ie. the tree of knowledge)

God and I hang out at his crib all the time, and I talked to him about this very subject. I sat with him on this REALLY comfortable chair, and he started telling me "I don't expect everyone to believe in the work that I've created. In fact, there are some things in life that would question whether evolution really exists, but I do that to keep everyone on their feet."

He went on to show me an endless room of angels on computers playing the game "Life". He explained to me that "Life" is just like "The Sims" in the human world, but it's actually real people. Every angel is assigned to a specific part of the world. As for prayers, he just answers those in an e-mail.

God is an awesome guy. He cooks the BEST meat and baked potatoes, and he's fantastic at guitar.

If God is real, then he created it. It's just completely illogical and ignorant to declare that Evolution does not exist.

Evolution MAY have a few issues, but not anywhere near as many as creationism.

I'm not religious and don't believe in a God so to me evolution is a product of science. Species evolving to adapt to their environment, for greater effieciency as a being etc. even knowledge evolving as the human race becomes more curious and want better things. To me evolution is most definitely real, we can't ignore the sheer facts in front of our faces. It makes me think, if there is a God wouldn't he/she/ have made us in one mould so there would be no need for evolution, or did he/she/ intend for the human race to adapt in its own way?

Personally, I believe it did happen. I also believe in God. I think that all scientific evidence is true and accurate, but that it doesn't deny the exsistance of God, either. I think the Bible is mostly stories and not to be taken very literally at all. Who's to say God can't exsist just because of evolution? I think the exsistance of God and evolution are both truths.

Also,

I agree with this. The religious nuts who completely deny evolution bug me. I'm fine with them having there own views, don't get me wrong. However, I find no credibility in any of their arguements.

I believe in evolution completely. That being said, I also completely believe in God. I think that the both are completely possible to exist together. I am not a Christian though, and I believe that Genesis is not literal in it's meaning, and that's how I can believe that evolution exists. I don't believe that God just created the Earth and boom he was done. I think He still shapes the world, with things like evolution. Though, in my faith we are taught that the human soul as always been completely independent. I'm still very new to this faith, so I need to question about that one... ask them what they mean. But, I also think that God gave us science and logic to study the world which He gave us, so science and religion complimentary to each other.

You hang out with him as well? We always try to get together on the weekends and chill. When we do, we always play Rock Band for hours and hours. You are absolutely right that God plays a killer guitar and he's not too shabby on bass. I'd like him to stay longer, but unfortunately, he works overtime on Sundays.

Sorry about that, I couldn't resist responding. Back to the topic....

Honestly, I believe in Evolution and God. As someone mentioned above, I also think it is possible for the two to coexist. In regards to Evolution, human beings HAD to change over the course of thousands and thousands of years, in order to adapt to ever-changing surroundings. Even today, we are still evolving.

I also believe in evolution AND God, evolution blatently exitsts and there is no way of denying it. But i do believe that God had a lot to do with it, i mean there arn't very many chances of finding a planet with just the right amount of everything just by coincidence.

If you threw away the theory that mankind evolved over billions of years from a common ancestor by natural process, could you prove where you came from without that as your guide? In other words, can you prove evolution occurred without having faith in a predetermined theory...

Re: So what do YOU think of evolution? - May 11th 2009, 03:10 PM

I believe in certain aspects of evolution. I find it hard to see that everything evolved from a single cell. My brain needs more proof than that, and I like to be able to see it in front of me.
I have done, we studied bones, and animals in my biology class, and you can see the similarities in the human hand, bat wing, badger's paw, and many more which originated from a common hand structure.

Weirdly enough, the head of my biology department didn't believe in evolution, no idea what he did believe in.

If any deity exists, he/she/it created evolution. If no deity exists and it's just us and the apes, that's okay too.

If there is an afterlife, I'll be glad of it. I want to see where evolution will take us next.

We share even more DNA with apes. That's why we give birth to live young, like apes, but bananas grow on trees. We both have skin though...

Anyway, evolution--it's real. How do I know? The flu virus mutates every year. That's why you can get a flu shot and still get the flu: because you got a different strain from the one you were vaccinated against. Evolution explains why carrots are now orange (they used to be purple, but humans selectively bred them to be orange). Both are kinds of evolution. Like all those finches in the Galapagos that Darwin was partying with.

The Human Creation issue gets dicey when people believe in Genesis literally word-for-word. But then we're really just talking about a matter of degree. Even Bible thumpers can agree that the carrots of today are more orange than the carrots of the 12th century. Does that necessarily mean that everything evolved from one original cell? No. Does that mean it's possible? I guess so. As possible as a single Creator deity making man in his image, well, just about. In any case, without a time machine it's gonna be tough to know for sure.

Yes we do. And the markers that we use to show that YOU are related to your parents can also be used to show that YOU are related to a chimp.

And yes we share DNA with plants because we had a common ancestor a long, long, long, long time ago.

And we are more related to a chimp than to a banana, by the way.

No offence to any religious people here but in my eyes evolution is a better explanation of how we got here than some almighty being creating us. Also, even if God(s) are real I still don't really think that they created anything.

Just plain sad...The even sadder thing is that I can name a handful of kids at my school who would ask the same thing.
