"Nude" scanner in Manchester airport - October 18th 2009, 08:37 PM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8303983.stm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/m...er/8313335.stm

So firstly, they're trialing a scanner that essentially sees you nude at Manchester airport. But you can opt for a pat down if you want one instead.
The second issue has only arisen in the past day or so, which surprises me as the whole "civil rights" issue is the first thing that sprang to mind, especially regarding children!! Seriously though, information into wrong hands? Corruption? Etc.

Your thoughts?

It's good in the way that you don't need to remove your shoes, belts etc and they can see if anyone has anything on them that they shouldn't have but at the same time, I don't like the idea of someone seeing the image produced and as you said, if the information got into the wrong hands or something else happened, it isn't going to be fair for the people who's images it is. And with children, it seems really sort of.. wrong to do that because it's a naked scanner.

Re: "Nude" scanner in Manchester airport - October 18th 2009, 09:28 PM

Once I am 18 I will get this scan.
Okay the idea is a little creepy but the good out ways the bad here.
These are the main reason why I will get it.
  • It will speed up check in times
  • Stops you having to remove everything (My bra wire alays makes the metal detectors go off so I always have to get patted down)
  • To me it seems more effective too
  • There is only going to be with one person looking at it unless you do have something on you then others will be called in.
  • The image is not saved anywhere either so it isn't like it is being saved on a big government database.
  • It is not compulsory.
  • Also it is not available for under 18s so it can't be looked at as child porn.
  • The image isn't pornographic in the slightest either, it is an outline.

Quote:
Ms Barrett said the black-and-white image would only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it was deleted.
"The images are not erotic or pornographic and they cannot be stored or captured in any way," she said.
Passengers could refuse to be scanned, she added.
I travel from Manchester airport regularly (normally terminal 2 where the scanner is). I won't be able to get the scan until I am 18 but I will once I can. It honestly doesn't bother me. I actually fell more uncomfortable with the pat down, especially if it was a man.

Another good point about this scan...

My boyfriend's family are actually happy about this scanner. My boyfriends younger sister has a cochlear implant and cannot go through the metal detectors because the magnets will basically rip the implant out. She has to go into a private room to be searched instead, this scanner will mean she can get scanned like everyone else and she says this will be less humiliating for her and save time. Once she is 18 she has said she will be getting this scan too.

There is realy no point in a nude scanner. A pat down is justas efficient and less hassel

Having travelled a fair bit, I think this is quite a good idea. The whole taking shoes and belts and coats off it so much hassle. Although I do think that, for now at least, it should be optional. It would be much more efficient, and only for over 18s.

I think its all good As Rachel quoted

Quote:

"The images are not erotic or pornographic and they cannot be stored or captured in any way," she said.
Passengers could refuse to be scanned, she added.
It a remote location, and the images would be very hard to match to someone, so they're hardly going to know who you are

Mmm, I travel a lot and traveling can be really hard when EVERYONE has to take off things and put them back on. It's really easy to kill an hour or so waiting in line.
While the idea of this machine bothers me specifically, it's still a good idea in general. It will keep everything much quicker- plus it's not mandatory if you do feel uncomfortable. It's pretty safe seeing that the person is somewhere far away and only sees an outline really... out of the thousands of people they see each day, I doubt they are going to really care about YOU specifically. Plus, I am sure they screen the people watching the pictures very well to make sure they have good intentions only.

I would refuse to use one of these because I have a bit of an anxiety disorder and I would be terrified that they would save these images.

I have also done a lot of traveling and I've never had a problem with the way security works now. Why does it matter if you get out of line faster? You just have to sit and wait for your plane anyway. I don't remember ever having to wait for a ridiculous amount of time in line for security either, despite having traveled many different times and places.

I would have more time to go eat before the plane goes, or even better I can arrive later get though the line faster and go straight to the airplane.

At most airports you have to arrive at least an hour or two before your flight is scheduled to leave.

Though your first point is good depending on the person. I prefer to not eat much right before a long plane ride. With the extra time that you get from having to be there early, you should have enough time to go get any snacks you want to bring.

They recommend you to get there one or two hours before, but there is no need for that. You can get there 30mins before and people are bearly getting on the plane.
I also don't really like the food from the plane and prefer to get something from the airport.

Hm, well for children, no. Because it just doesn't seem right for children. But as long as it's optional, I'm all for it. It would be great for me, when I have to travel. I don't like to be touched, so this would at least help me feel a bit safer about traveling.

I don't know what to think. I don't think it'd bother me that much if I had to go through a scanner like that... the images aren't kept and they aren't sexual, as they said.

I think it could really help the hassle of taking off all your layers and shoes before getting on the plane. The lines move so slowly because of that. Especially because lots of people seem to be like me and forget that wearing multiple jackets and scarves generally isn't a good idea.

Have people not noticed that the images don't really show much? Though I do understand the French Muslim women who refused to walk through it...

Uhhh did you look at the pictures? You can clearly see the genitals.

Actually some airports won't let you check if you're not an hour or two ahead. It also doesn't seem like a great idea to me to arrive late enough that you can't go buy a few snacks or something before you have to board. You never know what's going to come up.

What bothers me is the immaturity of some of the security guards, at least in Denver. The box that puffs a poof of air lifts up your shirt if you don't hold it down. When my class was going through they pulled out most of the girls to go through it and didn't tell a single person to hold their shirt down and watched intently. I was PISSED. ^_^ IF they're going to do immature shit like that, then I have a problem with it.

Lol. I suppose I'm used to it because I should wear glasses but I don't.

But if it's too sexual for children, then why is it not sexual at all for adults?

I'm not sure. I think pretty soon its going to be complusary. But although I do think its a good idea, I REALLY wouldn't want one, but then if they tried to give me a pat down search I would probably freak out too, so I really don't know!
