Political Ideology - February 4th 2010, 04:24 AM

Post up your political ideals, be they Communist, Democratic, Fascist, etc. We can debate and defend our views and explain their benefits.

Re: Political Ideology - February 4th 2010, 06:06 AM

This seems like a good junture in which to point out the Political Compass; a useful tool for figuring out who stands where in a debate like this:

http://www.politicalcompass.org/

I personally score about (-8,-7), meaning -8 on political and economic issues, where 10 is very right wing and -10 is very left wing, and -7 on moral and cultural issues, where 10 is very authoritarian and -10 is very libertarian.

In simpler terms, I'm very left wing politically; gung ho for big government, national public services and high taxes. And I'm very progressive culturally; meaning I support individuality over tradition, and the right of individuals to determine how best to live their lives.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Oh I remember this, ahh excellent test. I just took it again, "Economic Left/Right: 8.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 6.92". So I am very much a Capitalist and a business lover. I am almost as Capitalist as possible, but I am not all the way there. I was given a 6.92, essentially a seven so I am also very Authoritarian. This test has accurately placed me, surprisingly well actually! I consider myself a Religious Fascist, and oddly enough I was placed right by George W. Bush, who is my favorite President. I was also placed right by Wagner -points to German flag below-.

I love this test. I came up -7 on economics and -5.5 on social, I think that sums me up pretty well!

Haha, I'm almost dead center.

Often I lie wide awake, thinking of things I could make.
But I don’t seem to have the parts to build them.
I am so scared of what will kill me in the end, for I am not prepared.
I hope I will get the chance to be someone, to be human.

I did the test and it came out a bit like I expected. However, I expected to be considered more leftish.
So this is my score: (-3, -4,41). I'm quit communistic. However, I'm not like Stalin and I don't consider what happened in Sovjet-Russia as real communism.

I'm actually somewhat surprised, I ended up slightly left:

Economic Left/Right: -2.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.26

I actually usually have a tendency to be slightly right leaning, but generally find myself in the center.

Although if I had to class myself, I couldn't try to begin. I tend to be extremly left-leaning for things like Civil Liberties, but other things such as Crime I tend to swing to the right.

I generally asses each issue on it's merits...not how it fits into my "ideology."

And I ended up with -7.38, -2.13.

It's obnoxiously hard to be a strong authoritarian (5+) in this unless you purposely respond with extreme prejudice to the simplest questions.

I think that test should have an unsure option since I wasn't sure where I stood on some of those issues so I had to sort of guess agree or disagree.

What you and I consider extreme prejudice is actually how many people think and feel, sadly. I'll agree with you that anything more than about 4 or 5 toward authoritarian, I find somewhat disturbing.

One thing I find interesting is that there're very few people who end up significantly in the top left or bottom right quadrants.

If you read the faqs, it's done like that on purpose so you HAVE to take a stand on some of the hard ones.
But anyway:

Economic Left/Right: -1.38
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.08

Right where I thought I going to be. Very socially liberal, but in the middle in the economic side of it (mostly because I'm not very sure
Though, I think the left-leaning part is the way they worded the questions. For example:

Quote:
Multinational companies are unethically exploiting the plant genetic resources of developing countries.
Yes, I agree with this statement. It's obviously a leftist statement. However, I don't think that it should necessarily be heavily regulated...

Yes, i think that's strange. You know, at school, every day I hear insults like 'extremist', 'extremistic communist' etc. Mostly I don't react on it, because I know that those who say these insults are facists (no prejudice, it is like that). But sometimes they begin to say things like: 'daughter of Stalin/Poetin'. I don't think that's nice. It's not really a compliment to me, but however.
I think that people are extremists when they are ready to use violence. Personally, I'm a bit on the side. I don't want to kill anyone, really, but I think that sometimes, in cases like in the October Revolution (Paris), it is justified.

I also think that lots of people are thinking in such a (right) prejudice. Often they don't say it, because extreme prejudice is not properly accepted in the society, but they think it. For example. At school, we had a discussion about the Death Penalty and mistreatings for criminals, during the Dutch class. You have to know that we have no death penalty anymore, already for a long time. With the question 'is death penalty justified', everyone said 'no'. Because it's what you are expected to think. Here it's like: you have to say that death penalty is wrong. Or: you have to say that abuse by authorities on criminals is wrong. But I know for sure that half of my class is thinking 'yes'. People don't always dare to say all their right thoughts. And that makes me afraid.

Economic Left/Right: 8.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 6.92

So there really is no party for me, Fascism maybe, but that's not common. I would also say that it is because of common trends, people very Right wing on economics, are generally Conservative socially, while people very Left wing on economics are usually very Socially Liberal.

If I were to describe myself, I usually say "middle, leaning conservative." I tend to be right when it comes to economics, and left when it comes to social issues. So yeah, I guess this little test got it right.

Well, I didn't say none. But Guile's summary tends to be reletively accurate, on average.

You can; answer left-wing on economic/political questions and conservative on moral/religious/cultural questions. But there tend to be fewer people who think that way.

And you're still quite liberal yet. GMH.

Anarcho-capitalist. Obviously I'm always in the lower right of those tests, don't feel the need to go over another test to find out.

I strongly agree that some criminals are beyond rehabilitation and agreed that some need stronger forms of punishment. If you're up and arms that no one could POSSIBLY believe this, well you need a wider scope of situations.

Persay the violent gang rapist who constantly lands himself in jail. There comes a time when he just needs to STOP and if punishment by knowing he'll end up in jail is the only way he will stop menacing society is the only way, then so be it because I care more for the innocent victim than the criminal. Not revenge, more-so detainment and deterrent. I want my people safe and if that is at the expense of those endangering them, then I will take the measures.

Not everyone shares your views-- something you need to come to terms with before you have any credibility to your views at all.

I was highly to the top right, if you need to know.

And I strongly believe that the reason most of this generation is liberal is media influence. The majority was conservative during the 50s and those eras because of the same reason. Rationalise your reasons with current events and backings-- logic -- before you actually come to conclusions of where you fall. You may -think- something is logical, until you see the other side. The media shows you the palm only, but life won't hesitate to backhand you.

Yep, exactly what I thought. I'm with Ghandi and The Dalai Lama. Considering that I'm Buddhist, that doesn't surprise me
