The current state of things. - June 23rd 2012, 09:16 PM

I have decidedly become a theological noncognitivist with leanings towards either atheism, or Spinoza's god. This has been the natural evolution of intellectual curiosity over the past year. Things are rough.

My wife and I are splitting, my family, and hers, have essentially banished me from the garden. I may not be on here for awhile, but, I figured I'd update those who were curious. While I am deeply depressed right now, I am sure I will come up brighter on the other side.

Sorry for the lies I have spread over the past years.

I'm really sorry to hear of the difficulties you're going through at present, and I'm sure others on here would join me in wishing you the very best going forward. As someone who has been at various points on the belief spectrum during my life thus far - including de facto agnostic and at times atheist - I recognise this is a tough time even without the other issues arising, and hope that you find some clarity and peace of mind in the near future whatever your position ends up being.

What I would add, in relation to your last comment, is that in light of the fact that we cannot determine the truth value of many statements concerning religion, philosophy and metaphysics, I wouldn't be too quick to beat yourself up about "spreading lies". Were you actively coercing people into reckless abandon via your beliefs that would perhaps be different, but advising people based on what you honestly believe is no worse than what we all do on a daily basis. Similarly, I would advise you to keep an open mind going forward - if there's one thing I've found from my own journey, this aspect of life is anything but straightforward.

As I said, I wish you all the best going forward and hope things improve for you soon.

A lie is only told if the intent is to deceive. If you spoke honestly then it is only a mistake, and we all make plenty of those. I'm sorry to hear that things are hard for you right now, but I do sincerely believe they will get better. If I can help at all, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm not on here much any more, but you can reach me through facebook or email (Fletcher Gates, xujhan@hotmail.com).

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

It's a pity to hear about the problems you're going through right now. I do hope they sort themselves out soon.

I hope things improve in the near future

I see none of our past dealings as being built on lies or deceit! We are inquisitive folk; you moreso than myself and a lot of others in this forum! I am surprised, to say the least, of the "spiritual" or religious journey you've undertaken in your life, and you are by far one of the wisest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

With all that aside, I do hope for the best for you. It sounds like you're going through a rough time, and they will surely ease.

Because in the end, it doesn't even matter.

To update anyone who cares:

My wife and I will be finishing our divorce papers when she returns to Michigan at the end of this week. Which, then, takes 2 months to finalize to where I am legally divorced.

My parents have began talking to me again, but could careless, it seems, about my ideas or my life. That is, they are only really talking to me, I think, because they feel bad ignoring someone from their family. Not because they genuinely care.

School has put me in debt, and I cannot focus. I am discussing this situation with my professors (I have a 4.0 GPA and this past week I've failed a test, and got a 65% on a quiz, on all material I know and have shown to know). This is obviously stressing me out, it is to late to withdraw.

The depression aspect is still there, and probably will be for awhile. I plan on moving in with my friend who has been very supportive of all this. She, however, is moving out of state relatively soon. I plan to move due to schooling in December, granted I maintain my GPA. If my GPA stays up, I will be moving to San Marcos, Texas, for school.

I appreciate all the kind words and thoughts. It means a lot in a time like this. It's just kind of funny. I was told, once, that Christians are the ones who are "shunned," that are outcasts in this world, etc. Yet, everyone I know who is a Christian has done this to me. Kind of ironic.

Anyways, thanks everyone.
