Immortality of the Soul - January 29th 2013, 11:21 AM

Do you believe in it? Does the "soul" or some aspect of one's psychological being persist after death? Many religions preach that it does, though others are unclear on the matter. Secular humanists tend to reason that it does not.

In my opinion, the soul as we conceive it does not remain after death. I tend to reject the notion of the brain as a powerful computer, but it remains a structural entity that is powered by electricity and chemistry. As such, when it degrades physically, the content stored within must do the same. Much as a CD may begin to skip and accumulate scratches, rendering it unplayable over time, physical damage to the brain will destroy the soul. We see living examples of this in people with Alzheimers, Korsakoff's, traumatic injury, etc.

What then for the notion of "life after death?" I believe it is certainly possible that we may come to exist as new life forms after this life has ended. Our elements and compounds -- sugars, DNA, calcium, carbon, etc. are certainly recycled by the ecosystem and incorporated into new organisms. I think it is improbable, but possible, that "you" might exist as a human more than once. Also interesting would be the practice of cloning a dead human using his DNA. Would said person be a continuation of his predecessor's "soul?" Interesting questions to ask...

I personally believe that it's possible that we are "reincarnated" new body, new thoughts new life. If that does happen, then we don't have any of our previous memories or honestly probably nothing eve linking us to our previous lives, but that it's possible for us to feel life again and live again as an entirely separate person.

If something is immortal, or eternal, it would have had to already existed for eternity. In other words, your soul would have had to existed before birth. I have no consciousness of pre-life, and I believe I will have no consciousness post-life. There is no physical evidence for the soul, either. However, what I am made up of will exist eternally, but it will be broken down into smaller molecules and become fertilizer for vegetation so life can continue for others.

I am not sure what I believe, completely. There is a part of me that believes in this:

Must admit I would like to read a book or something substantial in regard to being reincarnated but I have no idea where to begin.

But, then there is a part of me that believes that our souls do, in fact, stay around, wandering, looking after our loved ones and just enjoying life after death. <--- This seems exceptionally silly but can't help but think this way.

However, the idea that once we die that is it and everything just kind of shuts off seems like the most practical of all things. But, the fact remains there are some things that cannot be explained by science and what happens after we die is one of those things.

What makes you think that it's imperative anything such as an afterlife or reincarnation (or any supernatural post-death experience) occurs? Speculation does not make something true, and science may simply be unable to explain it because there's no truth in it.
