Question Deepening my Relationship? - February 1st 2013, 08:18 PM

Hi! This is my first time using this site, and I'm not sure how it works, so let's see how this goes!

Today in my civ class we were talking about heaven, hell, and purgatory. It got me thinking, where will I end up? I really want a deeper relationship with God but I'm not sure how to make that happen. I've never felt Him like some people have, but I really want to. I pray a lot and ask Him to give me some sort of sign, but he never has. (Except this one time but that was over a year ago and there's been nothing since then). Does anyone know a way that I can start a healthy relationship with God? If you do, I would appreciate that so much! Thanks!

I personally don't believe in the "God of Abraham," so I might not be the best source of advice. However, I believe that we can attain happiness and enlightenment through cultivating righteous actions and thoughts. All humans are born with the capacity to perform acts of great love or great evil. Nourish the seeds of love and kindness within you by helping those in need, eliminating wasteful behaviors and practices, and being respectful of the Earth and its inhabitants. I don't worry about heaven, hell, or purgatory. I do worry about the pain we cause each other in this life and the scars that will endure.

What makes you so sure god gave you that sign? And why did he only give you one sign when you asked for so many more? Did he just ignore you all the other times? Just curious.

Gabby,

Asking God for a sign is like asking the President to write you a letter back personally. Just because he doesn’t, doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist and it doesn’t mean that he is not doing his job, it just means that he is busy and doesn’t have time to respond to every letter that is written to him every day. If he did, he wouldn’t have time for anything else.

Besides, people don’t believe in God because they have seen a “sign”, they have faith that he exists. And having faith means believing, without proof. You don’t need a sign from God to believe, you just have to do what you feel is right in your heart. And if you don’t feel that believing in God is right for you, that is OK too. You just need to figure out what works best for you.

Having a healthy relationship with God just means being a good person. Helping others, not judging those you don’t understand, volunteering your time, being a good friend and member of your community; those are all things that will strengthen your relationship with God. Be a good person, create a better place on this earth and be the change you want to see in the world. That is being a good friend of God’s.
