Explain Heaven and Hell... - November 6th 2014, 05:17 AM

Can someone explain to me why the nice lady who has been working at the food bank in her spare time and donating lots of money to charity and being a good citizen, but doesn't pray to god or believe is going to hell yet Jimmy the cocaine dealer/murderer who asked for forgiveness and stopped dealing cocaine and murdering people is going to heaven? Why does begging for forgiveness carry so much weight? And even if he doesn't want the nice lady in heaven why can't he just let her black out and fade away instead of being torchered for all of eternity?

There's this whole thing called Purgatory. It has a gajillion levels, one of which would include this nice lady. She'd then have the opportunity to work her way up to heaven. Jimmy would also have to work his way up from a much lower level than the nice lady. He does not pass go, he does not collect $200.

Dante wrote a bunch about all these levels if you'd like further reading.

Oh okay. I just had a guy preach to me for like 2 hours yesterday and he basically said it is black and white, heaven or hell. That's cool, I thought going to heaven or going to hell depended on prayer and in order to not burn forever you had to pray during your time on earth.... which seemed weird to me.

The nice lady probably goes to heaven, for one... even the pope of all people said that atheists can go to heaven. As for Evan the cocaine dealer (I knew a guy named Evan, cocaine dealer, prefer to use that example) if he actually stopped killing people and asked for forgiveness then tried to fix what he could in the world, why shouldn't he go to heaven? He's not the same person, he changed for the better.
Real world law doesn't work this way, of course, they'll get someone who killed somebody even if they did change. But God loves people more than the law does. I've always had the idea that God doesn't actually send you to hell, you do by choosing it yourself (my hopeful thought is that heaven is a lot more full because of this) which limits hell to people who are truly evil. I also think the good, pure people go straight to heaven, and everyone in between goes to Purgatory, where they basically learn about God or make up for their sins. I dont think its necessarily a punishment, so I take it back, I actually I think both people would go there instead.

As far as I know, purgatory is purely Roman Catholic doctrine, there isn't any Biblical evidence to support its existence. I agree with Mich's post.
