Male Birth Control - May 30th 2009, 04:31 AM

I wanted to know what you guys think aboout the new male birth control that can be used as - pill, patch, injection, implant, and gel

I'm not interested in learning about it or anything, I just ant opinions on the concept.

I myself love the ides. It's time guys start carrying their weight in the pregnancy game. It's not right for it to be the girls fault completly, like many people view it. "Oh, she should've been on the pill" can be transformed to "How were both of them not taking the pill"

EDIT: No, I do not mean condoms...

I'm not so sure about it yet. From what I understand, it's still something that's pretty new. I'm not sure that I would want my hubby to use it just yet in case there are serious side effects.

I'm not opposed to guys being equally responsible for protection. But I'm always a bit paranoid about new medications, and I personally would rather not use them until they've been on the market a while.

Re: Male Birth Control - May 30th 2009, 08:36 AM

I have a feeling that this thread might turn into a debate...

Quote:

I understand what you're saying, but I've heard quite the opposite when it comes to pregnancy. For the most part, I've heard and absolutely agree with the fact that if a guy doesn't want his girlfriend/wife to get pregnant, then he should of used a condom. It's a guy's responsibility to carry a condom, period. That's the first level, in my book, of protection. If you don't have a condom, then it's better to just not have sex at all. I don't care if you've slept with 100,000 women and always pulled-out. Shit happens.

As for birth control, I think that it's a good decision that women make. They take pre-cautions, and don't depend on other people. But is birth control a responsibility? Hell no! It's a wonderful option that women can take, but it's not that important.

So, I will have to politely disagree with your statement that guys need to start carrying weight in the pregnancy game. I think that it's been the guy's responsibility to provide the protection for a long time. It's just that since now we have other options besides condoms, I believe that some males are getting the wrong ideas that birth control is a woman's responsibility. So what I believe is that males are LOSING their weight on the pregnancy weight. Eventually, I wouldn't doubt that birth control would be used by almost all teenagers+ and condoms would be used less. Maybe "male birth control" will help males regain that weight that was once on their shoulders? I dunno.

Then again, if you can't trust a guy to have a condom, how you going to trust him to be on the pill? You can't tell if a woman is on the pill just by lookin' at her...

I think it's brilliant, and hope it will ebcome more available over the next few years. I've become all emotional and crappy since I started the pill, and it made me throw up at the start too ~ t'would be nice if my boyfriend had some sort of understanding of what I'm going through for condomless sex!! It's also trés handy, extra protection = *thumbsup*

I think that this has many more practical uses than most would consider.

For example, a breast-feeding woman cannot be on the pill, so if her partner were to take BC instead, it would allow them their time without worrying about harming their child.

I really like the idea, but until I know more on how it works, possible side-effects and other issues I wont be going anywhere near it.

However if it turns out to be good I'll be using it like a shot. Condoms = crap sex (for me anyway) and just using the pill makes me paranoid so both people being on the pill would be great.

I think its a great idea. If both are taking the pill, it's even less chance of anything going wrong. I think it will help to even responsibility...but then i find guys often get blame for pregancy...i.e why wasnt he wearing a condom...rather than why didnt she make sure they used one.

I definately didn't know about this, but I probably wouldnt be interested in using it. I have a terrible memory and leave the pill taking to my girlfriend, seeing as she remembers things.

Condoms worked fine for me in the past, and they will in the future too

Even though we're currently using condoms and the pill, it'd be good to see whats it like. I am quite interested in this idea.
But not until its been on the market for a while.

Woah, it's like a daily pill, the same thing women do? I haven't even heard of that!

I love that idea! I'd definitely wait a bit though if I were a guy...any kind of medication like that is questionable at first...

super! many women can't or won't go on the pill because it messes with them emotionally or it weirds them out (my mother and sister) now these women won't just have to use condoms all the time
also, when possible, why not have both parties on BC? better safe than sorry

I like the idea
I mean if the female was on the pill, and so was he. Double protection!
Or triple if you still insist on condoms too :P

There would be no way in hell I would trust a man to take it correctly.
He's not the one that has to have a baby - I am.
So I'll do the contraceptives and be assured it's all in working order thanks!

My boyfriend doesn't want me to be on birth control because of the ways it can effect your body, so I doubt he would willingly do it to himself. But, it is an interesting thing. And likes others have said, double protection!

I think it's great! Although I don't think I would trust a guy to remember all the time, so I'd insist on double protection (male BC and condom, or both male and female BC.)

Re: Male Birth Control - June 6th 2009, 04:16 AM

personaly, I dont think it's a good idea. Female bc works by introducing the progesteron and estrogen, hormones naturaly realeased by the body, in such a cycle as to prevent pregnancy. Granted, there are many problems with it, as you all know, (I can never take it because my family has a history of blood clots on the pill). At any rate, the female body is infirtle over a period of days during the 28 day cycle naturaly by releasing these same hormones. The male body, constantly produces testosterone to produce sperm. Anything that would prevent the production or maturation of sperm would not be imitating or even prolonging a natural release. I think it would could alot more problems than even the Pill does for women. I'd be very wary of it. (not to say that women should have to take the pill, that too has many risks)

Brings up a good point, I see a lot of woman believing a man is on the pill when he's really not if this gets popular.

Oh, and I thought this was pretty old stuff? I vaguely remember an episode of some show where the guy was taking birth control, the girl always thought he was eating peanuts before sex or something... Yeah... anyway..

it is nice that a guy will get that lovely responsibility. i hate taking the pill every day. but, i don't know if i could trust another person to put that responsibility in their hands. at least i know it is my body that will be affected if i do become pregnant so that way i know i will not be forgetting the pill any time soon

I was thinking that, too! Other than that, I think it's a great invention, though I wouldn't always trust that he was taking the bc correctly.

I think the trust thing is being a bit unfair to guys. Seriously, men don't want accidental pregnancies anymore than we girls do. What makes girls more trustworthy of taking a pill every day than men?

Well, because the woman is going to be the one carrying the baby and directly responsible for its well-being. The man is not. So, if your guy is the type to forget things and you get pregnant, it suddenly becomes your problem even though he was the one who agreed to take the birth control. The woman is less likely to forget, simply because she would have to deal with the results of a pregnancy more directly.

I'm not saying all (or even most) guys would forget, but it's better to be safe than sorry. That's why I'm for double protection.
