Why isn't masturbation dirty or disgusting?

I know exactly how you feel. I am 18 years old and until just recently had never ever thought about doing something like that. But as I did it I felt disgusting. I don't know why certain people feel the way they do about it all I can say is that it is different for everyone.

I don't see how it can be disgusting. It's self pleasure, making yourself feel good and relieving stress. We are sexual creatures after all, when we discovered there was a way to be sexually satisfied without another partner, naturally we got to it right away. It is also the safest sex around, ive never met anyone who's caught Chlamydia or Ghonorrhea from masturbating.

Masturbation isn't a dirty or disgusting thing. Some people feel uncomfortable doing it, though, and that's okay. It's not for everyone. It's just as normal to not masturbate as it is to masturbate.

It might take some getting used to for you. Remember that masturbation is a good way to relieve stress and sexual tension, without risking pregnancy or contracting an STD. It feels good and it releases endorphins that help you to feel happy. You're not nasty or perverted for doing it. A lot of people do. It's normal and natural. Plus, masturbation can also help you to learn about your body. It's a way of getting to know yourself; it's okay to explore yourself and experiment.

I know exactly how you feel. People on here have given me the advice to masturbate before, and I wish they wouldn't...

I myself prefer not to masturbate. If I do it's very VERY rarely, and only for a short time. I only do it if I absolutely have to release my pent up sexual desire. (my boyfriend wants to be abstinent, and I don't have a problem with it, but sometimes I can't help feeling that lust.) But on the rare occasion I do it, I always feel nasty afterwards. I just don't like the idea of doing it, but occasionally I just have to to relieve some of that tension. I think it's difficult for some people because it seems like everyone does it so it's supposed to be considered normal. Some people just aren't comfortable doing that, I know because I'm one of them. It seems like I'm the only one who doesn't like doing it, but I promise you're not alone on this.

Social stigma from religious times.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's healthy, let's you understand your body better and may even give you some ideas of what sex may be like, or what you might do when that time comes.

Masturbation is healthy. It's a wonderful stress reliever, just like sex. The way it makes you feel afterwards or during is just completely up to you. Not everyone is going to think of it as disgusting or morally wrong. I masturbate quite often actually, and as a female, I'm supposed to repress that? HELL NO! Masturbation makes me feel good, keeps stress out of my life and often brings me and my boyfriend closer than ever before. My boyfriend also masturbates quite often. Does it bother me? Hell no! If he didn't, I'd think there was something wrong with him.

The only real reason why I think it's frowned upon is thanks to religion. It's actually quite healthy. Don't feel bad for it, it's normal.

It's completely natural. As a growing organism you're naturally going to explore sexuality, even at a very early age (which includes touching yourself). It only seems wrong because of the reactions and teachings of the parents/religious institutions (however blown out of proportion). Most people do it and it's not odd for you too either (not peer pressure, just saying that it's not some perversion of nature for you to).

On a societal level, masturbatory practices were particularly seen as being dirty for women--which is effing ridiculous! We have the right to pleasure ourselves just as much/often as anyone else (and why shouldn't we? It's more difficult for us to orgasm anyway!--especialllllly from sex). I used to masturbate. Then for me it got boring. So I stopped. I'm not going to lie, it did help get rid of stress, but now I've got exercise to do that for me! Just wasn't for me, I guess.

I think people see it as taboo. They think it's wrong and disgusting because of what it involves. But there's nothing wrong with it. If it can cheer you up, and be healthy at the same time, then there's nothing wrong with it. If someone has never been told about it, they may see it as wrong otherwise people would have said something about it though, I suppose.

I started masturbating at a young age but I didn't really know what I was doing. No one else seemed to do it or talk about it so I thought it was wrong and stopped myself. Now that I know it's normal I can't get the same feelings I used to get so I don't do it any more because it doesn't feel that good.

I think the better question is, why is it dirty and disgusting? What about touching your own body, not someone else's, is honestly wrong? Most of the answers you will come up with will involve religious beliefs or social stigma, not an actual founded reason for masturbation being a dirty or revolting practice. It's perfectly natural and healthy to explore one's own body. However, you'll have to decide for yourself that it's okay.

I personally don't like masturbating (because I dunno how to turn myself on, which I feel is awkward) but you shouldn't feel disgusting. Masturbation is perfectly normal. BUT I do understand why it feels disgusting

Everyones basically already said it, but I'll just say it again, since sometimes it helps to know the numbers of people who hold different views etc. but masturbation is a perfectly normal and natural function of human sexuality.

The only reason anyone ever had anything against it is due to leftover crap from when religion held sway over society, ie. nothing that makes any kind of sense.

Like people have said before, I believe it is just a religious stigma.

I personally don't, but my friend used to masturbate quite often. I never had the desire to. Plus I wouldn't know how, even if I wanted to.

I think that it's okay. You're getting to know your body. Getting to know your own body is a good thing.
Plus, it's something that you can call your own. I don't think it is dirty because people make it seem like it's wrong, so you feel remorseful for doing it. When in fact, it's natural, and can start at a very very young age.
