Periods on birth control? - September 17th 2011, 10:38 PM

I have one white pill left before I start month 3 of my birth control. I haven't gotten my period yet but I have small traces of very bright red blood on a tampon (I've been wearing them just incase I get my period out in public). Could this be my period? My birth control is supposed to make my periods really light. I didn't think it'd be this light, to the point where it's just a drop of blood. the first month my period was still pretty normal, just two days shorter. I'm kind of freaking out because I haven't gotten my period for this month yet and I had sex multiple times three weeks ago and didn't use a condom.

Firstly, it's not wise and/or safe to wear a tampon if you aren't actually on your period. It could cause problems later on, and there is the chance for TSS (toxic shock syndrome). Instead of a tampon, wear a small pad or pantyliner.

Anyway, your body could just be reacting to the birth control differently. It could still just be getting used to it. Since you DID have sex unprotected, there may be a chance you're pregnant. You should acquire a pregnancy test to see if it would give you an accurate result.

If you get a negative result, you may want to contact the doctor who administered the birth control to you to discuss what the problem may be.

Offhand, I wouldn't be terribly worried, birth control does make your period significantly lighter, but if you're worried, take a pregnancy test. The hormone won't affect it, the hormone pregnancy tests look for is different than the one in birth control. Just take a cheap test, and if it comes out negative, I really wouldn't worry about it.

However, do always remember birth control only protects you against pregnancy, and condoms are always good to use to protect against STIs as well. But I really doubt you're pregnant. I think your body is just getting use to the hormone.

Hey there,
Your body could still be adjusting to the birth control. I'm on birthcontrol. I have been since june, and my period is still not fully regulated. It defitinitely could be your period, being exceptionally light. Or it could be that you're pregnant. In which case I highly suggest getting a pregnancy test. You're more than likely fine though. The best thing you can do is call your doctor to find out if everything is in fact normal. Mention being sexually active as well.

And as Shannon said, wearing a tampon while not on your period is unsafe. I suggest a pad. That's what I wear when I suspect ill be starting my period soon.

I think you have no symptoms of pregnancy because you are still taking birth control I don't think if it is normal but it is better if you consult for a doctor to check your condition.
