High blood pressure on birth control? - February 2nd 2012, 11:21 PM

So I've been taking birth control for less than a month, maybe 14 or 15 days. I go in for my physical today and my blood pressure was really high. Usually I'm nervous so they took it again at the end and while it had gone down, it was still high. They're thinking it could be because of my birth control. If I have to stop taking that kind of birth control, will I be unable to take any type of birth control at all, or just that specific brand? Would I just have to switch the type of birth control I use and hopefully be fine? I won't find out if that's probably what's causing it until I get my blood pressure retaken in a month. The birth control is helping my periods so I'd be upset if I had to stop it totally. The birth control I use is Microgestin Fe 1/20, it's put out by Watson. Thanks!

I can't really say that it's a side effect of your specific birth control because you didn't mention the brand you were taking. While it CAN make your blood pressure high, knowing what kind of birth control pill you're taking will help me answer your question better.

If it IS associated with your specific pill, you should talk to your doctor about finding an alternative contraceptive, like switching pills or getting an implant.

I'm on Microgestin Fe 1/20, it's put out by Watson. I've updated it into my original post now.

What was your blood pressure?

To be honest, I'm not really sure of the numbers anymore. All I remember is them saying it was high.Usually any time I go to the doctor for a physical it's high to begin with then comes down once I've been in there for a while, due to nerves. This time when I went in it was extremely high and then even though it came down right before I was supposed to leave, it was still pretty high.
