Weird looking thing in period blood? - June 23rd 2011, 05:40 PM

Hey, guys! Okay, so I was a couple of days late getting my period this month...and when it finally arrived, it was (or rather, has been) its same hellish self. However, meanwhile taking a shower yesterday, I noticed this red, semi-transparent looking "stringy" thing come out (imagine the transparency of a glass noodle--it was comparable to that, only red and extremely thin and "harder"). I'd say it was approximately 2/3's of an inch long. Several seconds later, this incredibly small whitish lump came out (it was kind of oval shaped--only one end of it was significantly thicker and rounder than the "tail-ish" end--which was extremely thin and kind of curved inward). I've never seen anything like that before--it wasn't mucous-y (like vaginal discharge tends to be), it was pretty solid (yet soft and malleable) and completely uniform. Size-wise, it was about the length and width of my pinky nail (it wasn't as wide as my pinky nail--more like half of that). I showed it to my boyfriend (as I've been staying with him these past couple of days), and his eyes got fairly large (as if shocked), but he couldn't offer much of a possible explanation (as one might expect, haha).

Has anyone ever experienced this before? If so, what could it possibly be?

Thanks in advance for the advice/help

*EDIT: Also, I've been more emotional than usual during this period--if that helps to contextualize it a bit more. In addition, the day/night before my period arrived, I was spotting brownish-faint-pinkish liquid...which is abnormal for me because usually, it delves right into "bloodier"-looking menstrual flow.

Re: Weird looking thing in period blood? - June 23rd 2011, 05:48 PM

Hey there,
I had something similar happen to me a couple months back. I was at work, sitting at my desk towards lunch time, when I began to notice that I was feeling extra 'wet' down there. I jumped up, grabbed my purse and walked to the bathroom calmly, only to realize that I had bled through my tampon, all over myself. Luckily, I caught it before it had seeped through my clothing, and when I removed the tampon, I had the same stringy bit come out of me. I was scared, told my boss that I might be late getting back to work, if at all, and went home on lunch. I tried contacting several doctors offices, but none of them had conclusive results since I couldn't go in right away and get examined.

It could be any number of things: a strange blood clot, or you could have miscarried.

What I did when this happened to me was run to the nearest pharmacy, and bought a pregnancy test. Once you've had a miscarriage, your body still thinks your pregnant for several days afterward, so the HCG hormone (pregnancy hormone) will still be in your body. I would suggest doing this before doing anything else. If the test comes out positive, then I would seek medical attention immediately, as going untreated could end up extremely dangerous for you. If not, I would try to get into contact with your GP or gyno to see what they think it might have been, and if they can do anything for you.

I hope this helped.
Shannon

Hi

During your period, the lining of your womb also sheds away, so its likely that may have been tissue or a blood clot from this. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

However if you are worried, then maybe go to your doctor and they should be able to put your mind at rest, or advise you further

Thanks, Shannon! I've been looking online for answers but not no avail. Being that this happened yesterday, do you believe that it'd still show up on a digital test? It's funny--usually my periods are extremely long and painstaking (not to say that this one isn't), but it's only the third day, and my "flow" has slowed down considerably...which I find odd. Perhaps I'm blowing it out of proportion, but I'd like to have some idea as to what the heck is/was going on.

Also, the first day was absolutely HORRIBLE! My cramps were quite severe and the back pain was tremendous...and as noted already, my emotions are all over the place (I mean, that's typical of a menstruating woman--but it's worse than what's normative for me). If it is a miscarriage, it makes sense because my boyfriend and I were having tons of sex a couple of weeks ago (sometimes one session right after another)...there was also an incidence in which we were both intoxicated (well, he more so than I) and we had sex...but he still managed to withdraw in time (I know that this is hardly a reliable method--but he has a low sperm count/testosterone, anyway...we've been doing it for about three and a half years and nothing has happened so far...).

I quoted this, but in regards to your last post, it would still show up on a digital test. Even if the test comes out negative, I would still try to get in contact with a doctor to see if they can get you in for an exam, if they think it's appropriate. I was extremely worried when this happened to me, but it turned out that it was only an extremely large blood clot that had been stuck and finally had removed itself from my body. I still get the tiny blood clots sometimes, but nothing as worse as that. When I had taken the pregnancy test, mine came out negative, and I had taken mine the same day.

I would try to get my hands on a test today and see what happens with it. Contact a local planned parenthood if need be.

Okay, I'll talk to my boyfriend about it as soon as he gets back from class (he's taking an exam as we speak)--and he'll be the one driving me to get the test, haha. So, not to be too nosy, but did you have the whitish tissue come out, as well?

I did. It was super gross. I didn't feel any pain at all, it just sort of came out. I freaked out, and luckily my boss understood...even those he was a dude. Thank god he had teenage daughters ;-)

Haha, what a decent boss! Do you think that it was an extremely early miscarriage? Or just weird uterine tissue being expelled during what would otherwise be a normal period? I've seriously NEVER experienced anything like this before--and what kind of freaked me out more than anything was it's shape (it genuinely reminded me of those images of tiny, developing embryos in biology/sexual health textbooks).

It really could be either. Just make sure you read the directions on the pregnancy test to make sure you are doing it right, and then go from there. If it's either positive or negative, I would definitely get in touch with a doctor.

Not to butt in or anything, but I think Shannon's hit it right on the head. I read your description in the first post, and immediately thought it could be a miscarriage. Just adding my opinion (:

Hope everyting works out how you want <3

Thanks, Kate! If it was a miscarriage, I'm curious as to WHY I miscarried (although I've read that even the slightest chromosomal abnormality during the critical period can cause a spontaneous abortion). Either that, or the fact that I've drastically changed my eating and exercise habits may have something to do with it. Yikess.

Nobody really knows why a miscarriage takes place. There is a number of things it could be, but I would hardly blame yourself. You didn't even know you were pregnant, if that was the case, so I wouldn't beat yourself up about it.

I've watched this from almost the beginning and I agree with Shannon and Kate, it sounds like it to me, including how you described the shape, but I think Shannon has the advice part all covered, just putting in my input.

Thanks, Cheye (such an awesome name, by the way!). Anyway, so just to provide you guys with a bit of an update--I didn't end up taking an at-home pregnancy test after all...disappointing, I know. I attempted to have a conversation about this whole "situation" with my boyfriend, but he seemed genuinely uninterested (he tried digressing from the subject a number of times--particularly when I suggested that it may have been a miscarriage). I know that this is going to sound absolutely terrible, but if you've read my previous post (the one concerning my boyfriend's speculative impotency), you'd know that for me, this is pretty good news (not because I would've essentially lost the baby, but because it would mean that he successfully impregnated me). So, perhaps I'm too quick to assume that it was in fact a developing embryo because that's kindddd of what I want for it to have been :/ I didn't push the issue with my boyfriend because he was exhausted after an organic chemistry exam--and not to mention, he's generally highly-sensitive to pregnancy talks (I suspect it has something to do with the fact that he may have serious trouble having children in the future--he's FINALLY going to consult an endocrinologist...and hopefully, he'll derive motivation to take better care of himself (he has binge eating disorder, and is consequently very unhealthy right now :/)...anyway, a different topic for a different post).

In any case, thank you kindly for all of your help and support. If anyone else has something to add, I'd greatly appreciate the input

Thanks, I am fond of my name, lolz, it's not my technical first name but I go by it and I like it, it actually comes from my middle name lolz, and as for the subject of the post, it may be too late for a pregnancy test now, Idk though, maybe you should still see a doctor though because if it was a miscarriage, it can cause health problems for you as far as I know. In any case, I read the post you mentioned and I understand why you would still be happy.

Like Shannon said above, nobody knows what causes a miscarriage. They sometimes just spontaneously happen. It's tragic and horrible, but it's nature, and there's not really any 'cause' of them, although certain factors increase your chances.

I would STILL recommend you go see a doctor though. As Cheye said, miscarriages can cause health problems, and while it may be too late now to know whether or not it WAS a miscarriage (because it was quite a few weeks ago) you should still go for a check-up to be on the safe side.

Quote:
Most women can expect their levels to return to a non-pregnant range about 4 - 6 weeks after a pregnancy loss has occurred. This can differentiate by how the loss occurred (spontaneous miscarriage, D&C procedure, abortion, natural delivery), and how high the levels were at the time of the loss.
Health care providers usually will continue to test HCG levels after a pregnancy loss to ensure they return back to 5.0.

Source: http://www.miscarriagesupport.org.nz/health.html

So you can see your levels may have returned to normal. That website also contains more information.

Again, I hope everything turns out okay, but I urge you to see a doctor to stay safe <3

I have read a statistic that said only one in eight pregnancies will end up with a baby and that most women don't even know they miscarried or were pregnant as some pregnancies just end in the first few week for a number of reasons.
Most of the time it's nothing to do with you, the pregnancy may not have been viable or it may have just been random...
