Question My daughter gets so upset she throws up - July 29th 2011, 07:51 AM

My daughter just turned one, and I made the stupid mistake of putting her to sleep and sleeping with her in my bed for the past 3-4 months. What happened was she got sick and so I slept with her because she was having issues with sleep, and then it just turned into an everyday, all the time thing. Well now I want her to sleep in her crib. So what I do is I put her in her crib, I turn her projecter on, and I sit over her crib and rub her for ten minutes. Usually she falls asleep, but when the projecter turns off, I turn it back on and leave the room for ten minutes if she's still awake. She usually cries, but sometimes she gets so upset and cries so hard that she will have bowel movements, or tonight she threw up from crying so hard. I don't know what to do. I really don't want to and I don't feel like I should have to stand over her crib for more than ten minutes to get her to go to sleep, but I don't like that she gets so upset. I don't want her to think that throwing a fit will get her, her way, but I don't want her to get so upset that she throws up and has bowel movements. What should I do?

Best I can think of is clean her up and put her back in the crib. Maybe move the crib to your room for a bit so she can get used to it.

I agree with the idea of moving the crib to your room, so she gets used to sleeping in her own bed, but not completely alone. Then, when she's happy doing that at night (and she won't be at first!) move her back to her room. She'll cry and throw a tantrum, but she can't sleep with you until she's 18!

Here is a link with parents who went through the same thing and some ideas on what to do: http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/sleep/vomiting.html

I understand she's not as old as a few of these though, but maybe these can give you starts to ideas on how to handle it.

I agree with the posters above to move her crib to your room for a little while.

I guess I should have mentioned her crib is in my room already.

Thank you for the article, it was pretty helpful! It sounds like I should just be putting her to sleep. Although crying it out is probably a good method, when she gets so upset to the point that she's throwing up, it's probably not good stress for a baby. Sounds like I'll be putting her to sleep from here out.

I don't really know if that's the RIGHT advice, but I thought you might like some other parents' advice. Really, I would call her doctor or a doctor and see what they suggest. putting her to sleep isn't a bad thing, but having her sleep in the same bed with you indefinitely may not be healthy either.

Try different things, like the woman who would stay in the room putting laundry up until the child fell asleep. Try singing her to sleep in her crib. Or after she falls asleep in your bed, put her in her crib and see how it goes.

The choice is up to you on what you do, though. I do wish you the best and hope you are able to find something that works for you.

I hope it gets solved soon Taylor.
I cannot believe she is already one by the way. Gosh, it seems like not too long ago you were pregnant.

I suggest trying to create a peaceful sleeping routine which she enjoys in which she knows bedtime will be coming up, things like bathing, baby massage, last bottle, brush teeth and story time will help wind her down. Give it time, my little guy is 15 months and he hates bedtime, he fusses and cries but after about 5 minutes he gives in, he'll lay down in his crib and sleep.

I know I can't believe it either! Yeah I think it would be best for me to put her to sleep and then lay her in the crib or put her to sleep while she's in the crib. The fact that she gets so upset that she throws up really bothers me, so I think it would be best for me to keep her calm. So that's what I've been doing. Thank you guys!
