Mirena IUD + Depression - May 25th 2014, 04:08 AM

I've been on Mononessa for nearly two years now, but I really think I need to change. I've had depression for about eight years, and it gets monumentally worse around my period. It's to the point where it's negatively affecting my life.

I was wondering if getting a Mirena IUD would help, because periods wouldn't happen anymore, or if it would make it worse?

Sorry I couldn't be there, I was tied to a rocking chair.

Hello Katie,

The IUD is really safe and you can have it in up to five (5) years. Periods do decrease after 3-6 months to spotting or to no spotting. You may cramp around your period after 3-6 months with it in due to your body isn't used to a foreign object in the body. However, periods will spot and the spotting will become nothing.

I found a really interesting site on Mirena's and what is in them, how it works, all the positive and negatives, as well as being aware of other information. I think it can answer many of your questions and more.

Mirena (levonorgestrel-releasing) Intrauterine System

I would also discuss more questions you have with your health care provider where they can answer your questions in detail and if you are a good candidate for the Mirena.

One of the benefits of having the Mirena is I don't have a period and my spotting has stopped after 2 months, I do however, sometimes get cramps around my "period" time but that's because my body is still getting used to that foreign object. I don't spot anymore, sometimes just the slightest spot but its nothing to grab a liner. I found my mood to have changed slightly but not entirely, however others react to medication than others.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to write back or you can PM me.

Take Care.
