Do i have Diabetes? - August 14th 2011, 07:26 PM

I've been having some really weird symptoms for the last month including a mad first, peeing a lot and i feel quite weak all the time. I got pretty freaked yesturday because i had been feeling fine all day and then i started feeling really sick and crampy, i started shaking really badly and could barely stand up. I started gulping water to see if i'd feel better but when that didn't work i struggled down the stairs and decided to eat an apple. It didn't really do much but then i had my tea and i felt perfectly fine after wards.
I didn't realise that i hadn't had anything to eat for about 6 hours.
Mom had mentioned earlier on this month that i potentially have diabetes as it does run in both sides of the family.
I think it would be best to get checked out at the doctors but i'm scared that i'd be wasting his time...

What do you think i should do?

Erin x

If you suspect you may have diabetes, you should get to the doctors as soon as you can. It doesn't matter if it's a waste of the doctor's time. You're talking about your life here & you need to treat the diabetes properly. Or if it isn't diabetes, you may have something else wrong that should be treated asap as well. Good luck & take care.

Hey thanks for replying, it means alot to me. It's obviously monday tomorrow so i think i'll speak with my mom about it and see what she thinks. If i tell her that it's just for peace of mind she may allow me to go and get checked out with the doctors. It would just make me feel alot better. And your reply has made me feel alot better too so thankyou x

Hey Erin,

We're not doctors on here so we can't diagnose or say for certain if you have diabetes so if you do worry about this then I'd suggest going to a doctor to be tested.

That said, the symptoms you described are very vague and aren't just linked with diabetes and it's more likely that you were just low on blood sugar due to not eating rather than having diabetes.

It's true that you are more at risk if diabetes runs in your family but people don't usually develop type 2 diabetes at such a young age.

If you're worried though then just watch your diet and exercise regularly to lower the risk of developing diabetes.

Take care

If you seriously think there is even a CHANCE it's diabetes, you NEED to see a doctor. If it is, you need to get all the fun equipment that goes along with it. It sounds like there's SOMETHING going on, it could just be hyper or hypoglycemia, or it could be diabetes. You really need to see a doctor, diabetes isn't something to mess around with.

Hey Erin,
If diabetes runs high in your family it would be advisable for you to go get a blood test done for glucose levels. About a month ago I started to develop some symptoms and since diabetes also runs high in my family the doctor was worried I would have type 1 diabetes I went to take the blood test to check my glucose levels and they came back somewhat high. The fact that I went to the doctor when I first started seen all the symptoms made a huge difference, just to keep your mind in peace go check yourself out it could make a big difference from you having to deal with diabetes or not. Good Luck.

You should get to a doctor asap. I was 5 y/o when i got my diabetes. worst day ever. If your bg (blood glucose) is high it can have devastating affects on your body.

If you're not eating regularly, your blood sugar could be running low and as a result you feel horrible.

I agree that you should see a doctor asap.

It could be diabetes/ high blood sugar, or it could be hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and/or pre-diabetes. Or it could be something else entirely- I don't know.

If I were you, I would try to have something to eat at least every four hours (even if just a snack) and also try to have protein with every meal. It would also be good to watch out for highly sugary things as those might mess with you.

Ok thanks everyone, you've give me alot to think about now.
It seriously didn't cross my mind to eat that day so i got really freaked lol. But i've done that before and i'd been completely fine. I've woken up this morning and feeling a touch shaky, just not right. So i'll eat soe breakfast and see how i feel x

Hey Erin,
If diabetes runs high in your family it would be advisable for you to go get a blood test done for glucose levels. I don’t have a lot of advice but I’ll tell you a story that recently happened to me. About a month ago I started to develop some symptoms and since diabetes also runs high in my family the doctor was worried I would have type 1 diabetes I went to take the blood test to check my glucose levels and they came back somewhat high the doctor put me in a diet and I just went back to the doctor again and my glucose levels were in the "average" levels. The fact that I went to the doctor when I first started seen all the symptoms made a huge difference, just to keep your mind in peace go check yourself out it could make a big difference from you having to deal with diabetes or not. Good Luck.
