Did medication work for you? -
March 7th 2009, 10:17 PM
Well, I went to see a psychiatrist today and I got prescribed a pill for depression, it's called Lexapro. Apparently it's a newer medication that treats the depression faster. And I know that everyone's brain is different and it works for certain people but not for others, but is there any statistics or anything? Like just antidepressants in general, do they work for more people than not? I don't know much about the medication and they didn't tell me to much about it aside from the possible side effects and risks and all that.
But, I'm just wondering, for any antidepressant in general, is there any statistic for how many people are actually affected by them at all? Sorry if this was already asked anywhere, I couldn't find it on the forums.

I was on Lexapro as well. And honestly, it didn't seem at first like it was working for me. All of a sudden, after I had joined theater, I started just being happier and not being very depressed or anything anymore. I don't know whether it was the medicine finally kicking in, or me joining theater however. Personally, I think it may have been the mix of the two: Finally finding something that I really loved and the medicine.
Hope this helps you some. =)

I am on medication, except mine's zoloft. They work for me.
They calm you a lot, they really help, just some can give more side effects on some for a while but nothing major on me.

I was on Paxil, which wasn't working for me, and I've recently changed to Zoloft. I myself haven't noticed a difference, but my family seems to think it's working. They say they've noticed changes, that I'm less moody, more pleasant to be around etc.

Yeah, I actually am trying it, haha. I'm supposed to start with half of a pill for about two weeks, and then switch to taking the whole pill, and just get it in my system, and I took the first half yesterday.

Unfortunately medication did nothing for me. I tried Prozac, Sertraline and Mirtazapine and neither of them worked.
I guess my depression was nothing to do with chemicals but it was all emotional.

I have taken prozac in the past, but I didn't find it helpful. I have also taken risperidone, which made me gain weight so I stopped taking it. I don't think I would ever take medication again; it didn't seem to help.

Different meds work for differen people...Iv been on the anti-depressants...Seroxat, Citalopram, Escitalopram, Venlafaxine & prozac. Prozac was the one that worked...& is still working today..remember though, give the meds time to work.

I was on Citalopram a while back and all that did was make my SH worse and give me suicidal urges whilst almost incapacitating me with side effects. Now I'm on venlafaxine and generally, it works. I did have to have the dosage upped recently though.
It helps keep me calm, helps distressing incidents and events not get to you as much, you know?
Don't worry about it though Amanda, anti-depressants generally do work. You might start feeling some side effects like sleep disturbances and nausea, but they'll generally stop after a couple weeks at the most, though if they don't, just tell your doctor.
If side-effects get too bad or if Escitalopram (Lexapro) doesn't work for you, then there could be another kind of anti-depressant that will, just make sure to tell your doctor.
I hope it works out for you =)

No, medications only seemed to make me worse. But that's just me, my doctor and I are still trying to find something that works.
The first medication you try might not work, but don't give up, you will find something eventually.
I have a friend who takes Lexapro, and it works wonders for him!
Just make sure you tell your doctor about any side-effects or if you think you aren't yourself. That will make it easier for them to help you.

I was on Prozac and it worked.
I could feel a difference when I took it regually, but I felt fake.
I took it sometimes and felt a little sad some days but that I was more myself.
I eventually stopped taking it and felt happier and myself.
So overall, I think it worked for me.

Lexapro, its a decent medication, it alters ur brain chemicals better basically, they give it to women to treat/prevent post pardom depression.
All antidepressants do is alter the chemicals in your brain to make it where it feels like ur not depressed. Thats why theres a chance it can make it worse sometimes, is because it alters them the wrong way, the worst one is Prozac, it was horrible, my mom had to lock up her guns when i was on it at first because she was worried and then she took me off completely. Another reason antidepressants can make someone more depressed in some cases, is because it makes the person feel worse, cuz they have to take medication everyday and remind them that they have a problem

Hi Amanda. I'm on Lexapro for depression and anxiety. The funny thing about it is that there is no OHMYGOD BAM improvement. Lexapro is in a class of medications known as SSRIs which block seratonin in your brain. So it's really a gradual thing (2 months-ish) before you see an upward improvement. I can definitely say there is an improvement from my former state 3 months ago (prior to the medication).

Since 14, I've been on quite a few medications. Each did the same thing ultimately, which was numb me.
I've been on Zoloft, Abilify, Prozac, Lexapro, Buspirone (I think it's called.), Lithium, Lithium XR, Lithobid, Seroquel, and Seroquel XR.
Lithium, both XR and regular, and Sero XR and regular, are mood stabilizers. The rest of them are just anti-depressants. Lithium and Seroquel are the only ones that've worked for me, but as I said, they made me more of a machine than anything.

I am on Lamictal and a anti-depressant that I can't spell and they have been really helping me out. It really helped even my moods out where I wouldn't get too low to the point where I was suicidal. But everyone is different and it takes time to find the right combo.
