How Do I Know That Someone Sees Me as Their Friend? - September 8th 2026, 06:27 AM

This is such an embarrassing question to ask but I got to know this friend group and they're everything I've dreamed of. They're chill and friendly but they're also academically ambitious, all of the things I aspire to become. And I just think that they're so cool. We met in orientation week and we did hit it off, especially since we're all in the same major, but me and the rest of the group are in different classes and I don't know their schedule enough to pass by and say hi. At first I thought it was over, that I should just give up and find new friends in my class, not saying that I don't plan on doing that but I just don't hit it off as well with the people in my class, but then when I saw them again they greet me as if we just hung out yesterday even though I probably haven't seen them in a week or maybe more. It's a really small thing but to me it's so flattering.

And I wanted to hang out but they're not the most outgoing people through text and I feel weird texting them since I don't even have a reason to. Well, I do have a reason and that is asking them to hang out but I don't know any place good enough to hang out. Hell, I mostly just chill under the tree to eat lunch or play on my phone. And I've never asked someone I'm not too close with to hang out, usually they have to already be my friend before I ask them to go out somewhere. I've tried texting one of the girl in the group that I think would be easier to talk to, but I guess she's just not as expressive through text than in real life. In real life she's perfectly friendly, albeit more reserved.

And another reason why I'm nervous about texting them is that I do find someone in the group attractive, but I don't really have a crush on him. It's like, when someone just have a very cool look to them you can't help but wanting to look at them and appreciate it. That sounded kinda creepy but I hope you understand what I mean. I don't have any plans on dating anyways. But just because I know how I feel doesn't mean others know how I feel. If I don't clarify they might talk about me behind my back like "god, he just wants to hang out so he could get close to you! Omg, I can't believe he's so shameless" but if I do clarify then they'd be like "wait, so you do like me? From the description it sounds like a crush".

I never really considered people I met last week and barely talked to as a friend no matter how much I like the person but that's because I dont want to assume our relationship, even if it's just friendship. But now I wonder if they consider me as a friend. It'd be really nice if they do, but I understand if they think of me as an anxiety ridden acquaintance that's a little strange

It sounds like these people are friendly towards you and are genuinely happy to say hello to you when they pass by! I think it’s okay to ask them to hang out. Maybe you can invite them to eat lunch with you? Eating lunch outside with friends sounds like it would be nice as long as it’s a nice day out.
