Shopping to lift my spirits -
December 6th 2021, 02:01 PM
When I feel low, I tend to do some online or stationary shopping. I often buy things for myself that I like - books, games, stationery and so on. I've noticed they bring me only illusionary and short-lived joy, but I do it anyway. It's not great for my budget.
What do you think about this? I know sometimes it's nice to buy a gift for myself, but how do I know at which point it becomes too much/too costly/unhelpful?

I love shopping when I am feeling down but I rarely ever make an actual purchase. I think it's important to be mindful of your mood as well as your budget when you are browsing through items on the Internet. Perhaps set aside some money and tell yourself "If I save X amount in the next Y months, I'll buy myself this item" because that way, it won't seem like an impulsive buy. Also, it'll give you time to think about whether or not you really want to make that purchase.

I know I shop too, but for me my bipolar can lead to impulsive spending. Make sure shopping and spending money don’t become all you think about. It’s okay to buy yourself nice things though if you’re able!
I agree about minding your budget and setting aside money each month for “serotonin,” aka buying stuff that isn’t a necessity but will make you happy. If you’re low on cash, think about if it’s something you need and will use more than once, or if you can wait until you have more money.
Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive
