I did a stupid thing at work. help! - December 22nd 2015, 10:31 AM

I'm 18 and I have a full time job.
they asked me to work right up to Christmas eve on nights to which I agreed to.
today I was exhausted and decided to go home because I couldn't take it.
I told my office the flat I rent got broken into while I was away (I work away) and had to go home.

they said okay but they need a crime reference.
it's too late to back out of it now so I need an excuse as to why my flat was broken into that doesn't need a crime report.

help!!

Hey there,

I would say that either tell them the truth, that you didn't think about what working up until Christmas eve would be like for you, or tell them that your flat didn't get broken into; it was a mistake/misunderstanding. You can't keep making excuses as the lies will only have to get bigger and you'll probably get caught out.

I was thinking of saying the door was forced by my landlord because my boiler was leaking to the floor below and he had the wrong key

Honesty is the best way to go.
If they can contact your landlord you're screwed.

I agree with the others. Honesty is the best way to go and lying to them isn't the way to sort it out. You could just admit that you were exhausted, or you could lie to them, and eventually be caught out. And as Christina said, if they can contact your landlord you're screwed.

Nobody should be giving you an excuse so you can further this lie. The professional world requires honesty and commitment. If you weren't feeling well you should have let your boss or a supervisor know and they may have let you head home. That's a pretty big lie to say that your place got broken into and I don't think there's a way around having a crime report. You're going to have to tell the truth.

And here you are living, despite it all.
