Re: Trump supporters stormed the capital -

I was chatting with my a friend who lives in California and he was very distressed over the whole thing.
I honestly don't even know what to say. I'm all for divided opinions, because everyone has a right to their own, but this is beyond that. The US is already suffering with between 190-220k cases of Coronavirus per day. Plus all the other protests that have happened. I feel for all those who are already under tremendous stress, especially the medical services and every day folk who are being dragged into it.

This is totally bonkers!
The root of this is Donald Trump. The man is highly dangerous. He's deranged. The violence that Donald Trump has unleashed is terrifying, and the Republicans who stood by him have blood on their hands.
Storming Capitol Hill is wrong. The scenes coming out of Washington tonight are an attack on democracy. This is a direct, violent challenge to democracy. Nothing but a politics of hate! I'm appalled!

I'm not really surprised. Donald Trump at a debate told the Proud Boys and other right-wing extremist groups to "stand back and stand by" if he didn't win the election. He's been complaining about nonexistent voting fraud since the election was over. He instigated this all the way up until he made the video telling his supporters to go home. That was about an hour after the Capitol takeover and it was basically just to avoid taking personal responsibility for what happened.
He should be arrested for treason and insurrection.

The United States has quickly gone to hell in a handbasket and it's only getting worse. These aren't protesters, they're terrorists.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone is shocked. Here's what I posted on Facebook about it
"I suspected after the 2016 election, that the Republican reaction would be just as bad, if not worse if/when the shoe was on the other foot... And here we are. Democrats protested, but there was NOTHING like this. I will repeat what republicans kept telling us: You lost, get over it! You don't get to be self-righteous if you're 1000 times worse when the tables are turned."
Adding now: Democrats were CONSTANTLY told to "suck it up" "You lost, get over it." "The entitled generation is throwing another tantrum because they didn't get their way." etc. And yet, when they lose, this happens. That bothers me more than anything. 18 days until inauguration. But, the more I think about it, I worry for Biden's safety once in office.
Yes, I'm a democrat and I realize that it's not all republicans, but you get the point.

President Donald Trump had asked his supporters to march towards the Capitol in protest. He must have known they were going to cause violence.
It was reported he told them to stop. Which was about as much good as knowing the horse had fled the barn, knowing full well that damage and mayhem had already been caused. Bloody man.

But Trump plainly won the election because of his supporters, some of whom rued the day he got into power for much as of bad things he was publicized for.
A classic narcissist, Donald Trump harassed institutions, trampled on democracy and divided his own camp. One thing is certain: On January 20 after he hands over to Joe Biden, leaving the White House will strip Trump of that presidential immunity, exposing him to an avalanche of lawsuits that have piled up over the four years he's been in office. And after all the lawsuits and accusations and his paying back taxes he's dodged, the man will become a nobody. Even his wife might leave him.

I’m not at all surprised, but I am still angered and devastated. I think what bugs me about this domestic terror attack (let’s call it what it is) is how differently authorities approached it than BLM protests. No tear gas, no rubber bullets, no mass arrests...makes you really realize at the root of all this is white supremacy, and Donald Trump is now the face of that.

There were clips and photos of the police assisting the protestors and there's one video of the police opening the gates.
The response to this compared to BLM is astounding. It's very hard to ignore. Donald trump is the face of white supremacy in America and its sad to see what America is turning into.

All the same, Trump stokes division. All he's good for is being hogtied and throwing into the Missouri. He's a classic narcissist and a bully, just like our birth mother. Bloody man, I hope he gets impeached.

He's already impeached, I don't know if he can be impeached again (it's never happened before) I don't understand how so many people are just now screaming for him to be thrown out of office with less than 2 weeks of his term left. HELLO we've been saying this for the last 4 years!

I'm already seeing my conservative family members on Facebook throwing out conspiracy theories about how Antifa instigated the riots. The terrorists are literally out there SAYING that the reason they did this was because Trump goaded them into doing it and/or they're Oathkeepers/Proudboys/QAnon. They had literally been PLANNING this event on the internet (Twitter, Parler, probably others), set for January 6th, to force Congress to accept Trump as president and hang opposing politicians as traitors- and now they're online saying it was their enemies who did that. They didn't skip a beat. I dont know what percentage it is, but a giant portion of American conservatives are completely brainwashed.
I'm so sick of politics in this country. I would like to listen to reasonable ideological views and arguments from people and politicians to try and figure out how to best fix problems in this country. But how can you fix the country at all when a giant percentage of the population lives in a completely different reality?
I do love how in a brief interview with one of the pro-Trump supporters, one of them fully supports those riots and claims they had to 'do their patriotic duty'. I'm all for defending one's country, but that isn't patriotic at all. It's chaotic.
It's truly amazing how one man can incite such violence within a country. I feel for all those in the US who have had absolutely nothing to do what has been happening yet has had to be caught up in it, one way or another. Especially right now with Coronavirus rife in America, with over 200k cases a day.
I worry for those like my friend who works in a small corner shop in California. He told me how embarrassed he feels. Especially as the whole world watches. Not only that, he too, has had to face abuse from others solely because he has asked them to wear a mask, or pull it to cover their nose. At one point, an individual smashed up the shop because they claimed he was encroaching on their freedom.
As much as I believe in freedom of speech, some speech can be severely damaging, and in many ways. Because of Trump, people like my friend are having to suffer the consequences for just doing their job.

Honestly... I'm still pissed its not Bernie. I dont think Biden meets the moment at all. Biden promised moderation while the country desperately needs the massive changes that Bernie promised, especially on foreign policy and healthcare.
It's promising that the Democrats took the Senate though. Mitch McConnell would have stopped anything positive from happening in Congress- but honestly, Joe Manchin might just block everything as a Democrat.

I was wondering how Joe Biden will shape up. I fear for his inauguration on the 20th because it wouldn't surprise me if some ardent Trump supporter took a potshot at him. After the Capitol was attacked in that awful siege, anything could happen!
Last night we watched soldiers lying on the marble floor insider the Capitol. Lots of them. Not being disrespectful, but for a moment I thought they looked like guard dogs. Julie even saw a female soldier. It's good that all were there, guarding the Capitol building inside. That way, their presence will ensure any invasion of Trump supporters and/or QAnon and White Supremacist thugs don't swarm the building again. But Biden's future policies? I don't know enough yet. But up at the podium before cameras he spoke with conviction. No dramatics. Nothing like Trump's bombastic attitude.
It may take a generation before America's divisions are healed, but the world looks on in anticipation.
