I would rather illegal aliens move to Florida than any more New Yorkers - July 22nd 2025, 06:15 AM

Florida has a big New York/New Jersey problem. We are full of them! They hate their state so come here and ruin it. During the pandemic, there was a massive influx of rich New Yorkers (NY pays more than FL) and our housing prices went up more each month in late 2021-2022 than in any year in at least the past 20, probably more. They don’t become part of Florida culture. They have made us overcrowded and unaffordable for natives. People talk about ICE and illegal aliens. To me, every New Yorker is an undesired alien in my state. Too bad we can’t have ICE remove them all. Would make my day if all these rich conservative karens who never worked a day in their life but have a wealthy husband were suddenly put on a plane and flown back. The type of New Yorker who gets attracted the most to the state are selfish rich people who don’t care about anything besides avoiding taxes (and looking rich) and don’t feel any concern for social issues because they can buy their way out of them. I am ok with people from North Carolina, Arizona, even other countries like Mexico or Cuba. but there are just too many yankees here now. When a New Yorker wants to move, for some reason Florida seems to be the only state they have in mind. They all come HERE. Worse yet, many of them choose to live in New York for half the year and have a second home here. Second homes dont increase the number of people sheltered, they simply raise property values. Every second (winter) home is one less opportunity for a first home for a Floridian or an apartment. Florida used to be affordable until the New Yorkers started flocking here in insane numbers. They tore down old Florida homes and built expensive but ugly plain looking homes just because they are bigger. Same with apartments. Many of these New Yorkers don’t bring jobs with them, so income in Florida is still low. But cost of living is becoming very high. it does not help that some of the policies in New York primarily are bad for rich people and Florida's current government advertises itself as being pro-rich. This leads to a disproportionate influx of wealthy (ie. gentrification). Most of them past retirement age so again, they don't bring the jobs with them.

No matter how they vote, they bring their shit state of New York(or New Jersey) to Florida. They affect the culture. Some of them come here and criticize native Florida things.

I'm moving this to Current Events & Debates because I think it fits better there.

I think it's a New England thing in general for people to have summer homes up here and winter homes in Florida or similar states. I don't think there's much that can be done about it so it may be a good idea to recognize this is something out of your control and practice a bit of radical acceptance.

Snowbirds are nothing new. We always had them. What is new is them taking over our state in the numbers they have. The data doesnt lie. We went from one of the more affordable states to one of the least in a year(one measure ranked it the least) and income has barely changed. What is happening in Florida is far from the normal that was present until a few years ago.

They should choose another sunbelt state to ruin.

Let's hope it does get better. It is frustrating when there is an influx of people moving to your area. It's happening now with where I live.
