Closet organization tips
By Cassie (cynefin)

It can be hard to keep your closet organized, especially when you're rushing off to school or work in the mornings. This article will discuss ways to organize your closet from having a clean look to utilizing your space and storing specific accessories.

A clean look
Sometimes a refreshing look can motivate you to keep up with your closet! Here are some ideas to help you (and your closet!) freshen up.
  • Give your closet a new coat of paint. An updated look can help encourage you to keep your closet tidy. Choose a color you like so you have a reason to smile when you're getting ready for work or school.
  • Place a mirror in your closet. A mirror no matter how small or large will reflect your items back to you, thus motivating you to keep them neat and organized.
  • Remove your door. Depending on the size and layout, closet doors can be clunky. Remove your door and replace it with a curtain or leave it completely open for a different feel.
  • Use the same hangers. This is a little tip but it can make a world of difference in keeping things clean. Using the same hangers can get expensive, so consider spray painting them all the same color so you can utilize what you already have.
  • Decorate the inside of your closet. If you make your closet a fun nook to be in, cleaning it up won't feel like such a chore.
  • Organize your clothes. When organizing your clothes, sort them by the way you choose an outfit. Do you look for a particular color, style, or occasion? When in doubt, you can color code your closet to make things clean and easily accessible.

Utilize your space
Even the largest of closets can feel like a nightmare in terms of space. Below are ways to utilize the space you have.
  • Get a second clothes rod. Second rods often hang on the first closet rod and give you space on a lower level. They are typically inexpensive and they are a good way to give yourself extra space.
  • Utilize your wall space. Closets tend to have odd angles and lots of wall space. Use these spaces to hang shelves or baskets to store lightweight things.
  • Use top shelves. Top shelves are great for storing off-season clothes or extra blankets. Put items you use the least up top and items you use more down below. Extra tip: Stack storage containers to increase storage space.
  • Use the front and back of your door. Stores offer many options for organization on the door; options are unlimited! You can choose from items such as shoe organizers, jewelry organizers, coat hangers, an extra rod, or a few extra pockets to store your things.
  • Purchase a hanging divided organizer. These are handy for storing towels, sweaters, jeans, shoes, and much more! They can help you keep items out of the way and off the floor.

Storing the specifics
It can often be difficult to find storage for particular items such as scarves, belts, or jewelry. Read on to learn more about how to store these items.
  • Scarves and ties: Purchase some shower curtain rings and wrap the scarf around the ring. Then, loop the rings onto a hanger and hang it up in your closet.
  • Belts: Similar to scarves, you can close your belts on a hanger and allow them to hang in your closet.
  • Jewelry:
    • Necklaces: Store necklaces on a non-slip hanger and then hang it on your wall for easy access. You can also store necklaces and other jewelry on a mug tree or necklace holder. Consider displaying your necklaces on decorative drawer knobs on your wall.
    • Bracelets: Like necklaces, bracelets can be hung but they can also be displayed in different ways. You can store them in a clear glass or plastic container so they are visible when you are choosing some. Use an old glass bottle and wrap your bracelets around the base for a fun look. You can also fashion a bracelet holder out of a paper towel roll wrapped in fabric.
    • Rings: Place your rings in a magnetic bowl found at a hardware store, or keep them in a shallow bowl so you can easily pick through them. You can make a ring holder with clay as well. If you choose to do this, form a finger or cone shape with the clay and allow it to bake or dry before sliding your rings on them.
    • Earrings: Earrings can be hung up like necklaces and bracelets, but they can also be poked through attractive fabrics or put on pretty earring holders.
  • Purses and wallets: Purses wallets, and wristlets can easily be stored in plastic storage bins. They can also be stored and displayed in cubbies or shelves. Consider getting a purse holder and hanging your purses on the front or back of your door.
  • Other items: Consider using extra shoe boxes and storing excess, smaller items in them. You can even put shoe boxes in your drawers to work as a handy organizer for underwear or other small garments such as socks.

Closet organization can sometimes feel like a hassle, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. Utilizing your space and figuring out ways to make your closet seem like a more inviting place can go a long way in keeping it organized. Happy organizing!
