My dad's depressed which makes me feel depressed too and scared - November 13th 2012, 03:01 AM

When my dad gets depressed he can also become very vocally hostile and right now I'm dealing with my own blue emotions right now and I guess I'm really scared of my dad right now. Like if I don't express myself to him as perky as he wants me to he'll get angry and yell at me. I hate this. I'm tired of being fake with him and my mom but they don't accept the real me. I've tried but they just try to help and fix me...

I tell people i'm
tired. But in reality

i'm just sad.

Hey Sarah

I am sorry that things are so tough for you right now.

Have you tried talking to your parents about this? Not when you arguing, but sometime when you are all calm. Just sit with them and share what you've been going through. Don't throw accusations at anyone because that won't get you anywhere. Let them know how you feel and that you would like to get some support from them. If you have any siblings, you can also talk to them about how you feel. It is always great to talk to someone in your family who can understand how you feel about what has been going on with your parents.

I understand that things are difficult right now for everyone in your family. I think that you all need some nice, good family time. You can tell your parents that you'd like to spend more time as a family. You can all do something together that you like. Go for a picnic or a drive. It is important to spend some quality time together when you all are not fighting. It will help you to be more comfortable around them and enjoy their company which in turn will making talking about your feelings easier.

I hope that this helps.
My PM box is always open for you.
Good luck and stay strong

Bummer. I think the issues with most parents is that they don't want to believe that their own child is going through this, you know? So they react in anger. I'm still trying to tell my parents that they can't fix me. It's something that's always going to be in the back of your head.

You should try telling them how you feel. Explain to your dad that his actions are having an influence on your feelings. Yeah, easier said that done. You don't have to verbally say it. You could write a note or email them. Hiding is terrible, once you talk about it a weight will be lifted off your shoulders.
