Depressed? - December 15th 2012, 01:24 AM

So I've been a SHer for about 4 months now and I've been clean for about a bit over 4wks but some pretty shorty stuff came up in the last 3 woks and I just think I'm starting to get depressed I have felt so detached and lonely and sad and I'm not sure if this is depression but any advice would help thxs

Hey there,

it could be depression, or it could be something else, we at TeenHelp cannot give an accurate diagnosis based on not meeting you. You could go see a guidance councillor or something to see what they think. Or a therapist.

Hopefully you get this sorted before it progresses,

Hey, I'm Christabel. I think it's amazing you've stopped SH. It's not a good outlet.
Umm... Well, as Jay said, we can't really tell you if it's depression or not but if you're feeling sad over something it's important to address it as soon as possible so if it isn't depression, it has a lower chance of turning into depression. It could just be a sad spell that we all have but I'd recommend talking to a therapist or a counselor about it. Do you have a trusted friend or family member you can speak with about what's bothering you? It helps to tell someone, just so someone knows. It'll make you feel less alone.

A new hobby could help as well. Feel free to PM/VM or email me if you'd like to talk about what's making you sad. Remember, sadness never lasts forever.

Depression is an illness. Everyone in the world goes through phases of feeling depressed at one point or another. Perhaps its been a stressful few weeks at work or school and that can really make a person low and leave them feeling depressed, but that doesn't mean they have depression. We can't diagnose you here because we're not medically trained. You haven't said an awful lot and I don't know whether these feelings of depression have come on over the past few weeks or started months ago. If it is has been more long term, it might be helpful for you to see your doctor. If they feel you need some support, they might be able to refer you onto a mental health team or they might be able to advise you on who you can refer yourself too for some support. Thearapy or counselling may help you learn to cope with things that are making you feel depressed but if you want a diagnoses you will have to see a psychiatrist since counsellors and therapists are also not trained to give you a diagnoses.

However a diagnoses has to come from an assessment which could take a good few months. The psychiatrist has to know you before diagnosing you and they need to understand your symptoms etc. A lot of mental health teams have a psychiatrist so it may be that you start counselling or therapy and then they refer you onto the psychiatrist within that team too.

Or if you're looking for more support from us, know that we're here. We're here because we care about you and want to help people like yourself. You're not alone in this and even if you've only felt this way for a few weeks, we understand how hard it can be to feel that way and we can try to help you through that, okay? If you want to talk to us about anything, you're more than welcome to. We'll listen and we'll try to support you through it.

In the meantime, maybe you could take some time out for yourself to have a bit of you time. Relax a little and do things you enjoy. You deserve it.

It could be depression or something else, it's best to go to a specialist for examination.
If you will not be able to help you, reach alternative measures.

First off, I'm very proud of you for not SH'ing anymore, that's very good!

And I agree with what Palmolive said.

Take some time out to just take care of yourself and do whatever it is that makes you happy.
Or try writing down all your feelings in a journal or a blog. That could help.

I think it is better to talk to your parents. They can help you to overcome this. If it is not possible consult an experienced counselor.

I agree with Jay, we can't diagnose you. It does sound like you're depressed.

Remember, you can't conquer depression alone. We're all here for you. I think you should try to talk to your parents about this. In the meantime, what do you like to do? Do whatever it is that makes you happy. Get out there and expirence things! It'll make you feel a little bit better.
