How Can I Reach Out? - April 27th 2013, 03:22 PM

I have been feeling physically sick lately from the amount of stress and depression sprouting from both my school and home lives. A few of my friends have asked me why I have been so sick lately, and I have avoided answering, except when it comes to one friend, Emily. Emily has been extremely supportive since I told her nearly everything that has been going on. She urges me to find a way to reach out to an adult. I asked her to keep everything we talked about a secret, and she has, and has offered to find help for me, but I have declined this offer because I am not ready yet to tell my story to more people.

A few days ago, my English teacher sent an email to my mother with some make-up work from when I was absent. My mom forwarded the email to me, and I noticed at the bottom of the email that the teacher had expressed concern of me being sick and missing so much school. Earlier in the year, I had wanted to tell my teacher about everything wrong, but I lost the courage. Now I'm wanting to again, but I'm afraid. How do you tell a teacher that one of her students (the one who acts so happy most of the time!) that the student suffers from depression and as tried to kill herself before?

Oh sweetie, I'm sorry you're feeling this way. Depression can cause physical illness, so that is very likely the cause.

I think it's a good idea to tell your teacher! She can be someone for you to go to if you ever need help. You don't have to tell her everything if you're not comfortable doing so. You could simply tell her that you've been dealing with some very difficult problems and that you need some support. Then, if you become more comfortable, you can start to tell her in more detail. She could be a good source of support and encouragement.

And you have us on here, as well. You can feel free to PM or VM me if you ever need someone to talk to. I'm here for you.

I agree I think it's a good idea for you to tell your teacher.
A less uncomfortable way of doing it could be to email or give them a letter. If it wouldn't be weird you could ask the counsler or your parents to tell them. I'm sorry your feeling like this but support at school would definitely help alot.

I'm here for help
PM/VM anytime

Every heartbreak we go through makes us the perfect person for our soulmates. Shaping us into what they've always been looking for.

Need to talk, PM me.

To people(like me) who think asking for help annoys people I say:
It would bother me if you DIDN'T ask for help.

Hi, Lily!

So sorry you're going through this. Sadly, the depressing feelings are enough but physical symptoms show as well and make us more down.

I think it's so great you're wanting to reach out and you've been talking to your friend, Emily. That's really brave and takes a lot of courage to do. You're a very strong person! I think it'd be a great idea to open up to your teacher. She could give you helpful support and advice too. You could always try and tell her privately, or you could ask your friend, Emily if she'd come with you to hopefully make it more comfortable. Writing a letter/E-Mail or text could make it easier too.

Hope you start feeling better soon and you get some help and support you deserve. You can message me anytime if you need someone to talk to.

Stay Strong <3
