can i admit myself to the hospital? - July 18th 2013, 08:23 AM

i'm not a danger to myself - i'm not suicidal.
but i'm terrified of everything.
even sleep.
i'm obviously not stable.
i constantly think that i'm going to die.
i just want help and i don't want to wait.
so is it possible to go to a hospital and tell them i'm depressed/anxious and i need help? and admit myself?
i just want to get help.

all i want is a place to call my own and
mend the hearts of everyone who feels alone,
woah,

I'd say it's probably a good idea. They can send you on to the right resources and support that can help you. Although be prepared to wait quite a few hours - regardless of which ER it is, there seems to be a long wait.

Is there an afterhours GP service near you?

I had a similar situation earlier in the year, and took myself off to hospital because I was very unwell, knew no one and therefore had no one to keep an eye on me. It was the right idea at the time. Just be prepared to have them ask, so what can we do for you? Why are you here? etc.

Do you have any support around you? Anyone you can take with you to keep you company if you do go? Admitting yourself to hospital can be a scary and overwhelming experience, and having company is worth it if only to carry a conversation while you wait for the paperwork.

Best of luck with whatever decision you make. Hold in there, you're not alone. Hugs from us all.

Yes it is possible to admit yourself in the hospital. If you need help and think the hospital is the best way to get it than you should definitely do that.
I wish you all the luck in finding the help you need.

Yeah you can, I've done it before. Take a friend or relative with you if you can, it helps while your waiting to have a friendly face. Well with me I went with my best mate and he kept me somewhat calm under the circumstances and definitely helped.

Yes you can admit yourself to hospital, Like Megan said maybe you could bring a friend or family member with you, the hospital can show you where to get help,

I hope everything turns out ok and you get the help you think you need Sammie!

Eh, it's very, very, very, very unlikely they will admit you through the ER if you are feeling depressed and anxious but not wanting to hurt yourself or others. I work in the ER in a variety of roles including triaging patients and coordinating transfers from the ER to the floors. I do not think I have ever seen anyone admitted through the ER without an additional diagnosis of suicidal ideation or homicidal ideation for the psych floor.

If you show up in my ER, they may try to get this one center to come out and do a field eval if you do not meet admission standards for the hospital ER to see if you meet their standards. Then the center may decide to admit you to any of the local hospitals or take you to their location. Their admissions are different than the ER admissions and I do not know what they admit under. It's actually considered a transfer from the ER and then a direct admit from the center, but if you get admitted to our floor then you never leave the hospital but you weren't admitted through the ER. They do take quite a few people back to their center as they have an inpatient center.

It's kind of a complex system. Going to the ER, you may be able to access resources you do not know about at least. However, you may not be admitted to that hospital.

Oh, and if you have a psych doctor consider calling them. The doctors usually can admit to at least one hospital if they feel that their patients are unstable and require hospitalization.

In my experience, you can admit yourself to an emergency department, but being admitted to an inpatient mental health unit requires a referral from a psychiatrist. That could be your own psychiatrist, a crisis team psychiatrist, or a psychiatrist who works in emergency (psych liaison).

I don't know how likely it is that you will actually be admitted to a psych ward, your thing says Ohio so your insurance may have more to do with it. I know in my country, people are only admitted to psych wards when they're considered a danger to themselves or others, not coping at all at home, or they're experiencing severe psychosis.

As Sarasa said, I think it would be unlikely you'd be admitted through the emergency room. If you really want inpatient to get better then your best bet would probably be to see a therapist and talk to them about it. They can help you get into an inpatient facility. The other problem is that more than likely, it'll be a private one which isn't usually cheap but insurance may cover it.

I personally can't see a reason as to why they would admit you. You're not in danger to yourself or others and you say that. I think that you could benefit from support from a community mental health team but I don't see why you would need such intense support as an inpatient right now.

So my advise, if you don't already, would be to talk to your doctor about counselling/therapy and see what they advise and if they can refer you onto a team etc.

I didn't read this properly the first time aha. I thought it was just asking if a person can admit themselves to hospital. Haha oopps. I really shouldn't reply to threads late at night when I'm half asleep. Anyway on second thoughts if you aren't danger to yourself or anyone else then you probably would not be admitted. So yeah listen to everyone else's advice cause mine well yeah haha.

I don't think you could since you aren't a danger to yourself or others. However I think it'd be a good idea to get some support from a therapist or counselor. Hope you start feeling better! Hang in there.
