I want to hurt myself - January 27th 2019, 09:47 AM

I have been fired 5 times this year because of my dyslexia. I have had some really well paying jobs to!

I’ve got another job in a phone shop I love working in phone shops but it’s all sales targets and I know I’m gonna fail and get sacked again life’s not fair I have not even started yet

Hey there,

I'm so sorry to hear that you're dealing with this! May I ask how your dyslexia has led to you getting let go? Have you disclosed your disability to your employers? I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but here in the US employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities that help them function in the workplace. It's far from perfect, and although employers are not allowed to discriminate against or fire someone for their disability, it still does happen sometimes. However, sometimes not disclosing your disability can cause as many (or more) issues as not disclosing if you have a disability that directly impacts your work. If you haven't already, it might be worth telling your employer about your dyslexia and letting them know how it affects you if you haven't already; I would also encourage you to try to think of anything that might help you perform better on the job. Remember that it's 100% okay to ask your coworkers for help!

I really hope that your new job works out for you! I know it's hard right now, but try to learn from your past experiences. What was it about these jobs that worked well for you? What didn't go so well? What specific challenges did you encounter and how could you possibly avoid these in the future?

No matter what, please don't hurt yourself. Do you currently see a therapist? If not, it might be a good idea to reach out to one and let them know how you've been feeling. I know everything must feel so hopeless right now, but you can get through this.

I wish you all the best!
