What can I do? - December 26th 2019, 10:12 PM

Ok, I'm sorry in advance if I sound selfish, or like a horrible person, I just, need to get this off my chest.

I ave a group of friends on Discord and tiktok and stuff, and I really care about them, and I love them a lot. But I just get stressed a lot, because a lot of them suffer from depression and anxiety, and it just seems like there's not one day when one of them is contemplating suicide and I get so worried, and I want to help them, but the only thing I can do is offer words of support and encouragement, but that only does so much after a while you know? I'm not close enough to do anything, and I just...I wish mental health was taken more seriously, I wish I could do more, I wish for a lot of things, and I just worry that one of these days I won't be able to talk someone down and i'll never be able to talk to them again. I feel so helpless sometimes, and I don't know what to do.

You do enough. You are a good friend. You listen. You're there in whatever capacity you can be. That is all one can do in your situation. Yes, it sucks that mental health isn't taken more seriously. Yes, it sucks hearing your friends are suicidal or hating themselves. It's one of the worst feelings ever to care about someone and see them want to self-destruct. But you can't fix it, and wishing you could will only drive you crazy. Instead, focus on offering the support you can offer. You don't have to "talk someone down" to be a good friend or have your contributions to the relationship matter. You are valid as you are.

It's not in your power to physically stop anyone doing anything. You're doing what you can, and that's always enough. Everyone wants to be able to help and go above and beyond but it's not reasonable or possibly all the time, especially when it's an online community and you have no physical contact with people. All you can do is support them, offer them a shoulder to lean on and a friendly person to come to when they need support. Never blame yourself for anything when you're trying your best. You're only human and you're obviously a caring and loving friend and I'm sure they know and appreciate that already.
