I want to support suicide awareness and prevention but I don't know how - June 19th 2009, 04:16 AM

After enduring the shock of a student's suicide in my high school this past year, and after dealing with my own depression and suicidal thoughts in years past, I feel this intense desire to do something to help spread awareness about suicide. I browsed through the threads here before I started writing this, seeing how many people seem to be on the verge of taking their own lives - and it brought me this unfathomable sadness, to know that so many people don't want to live anymore, and to know that I once had thoughts like that.

I want to do something to help. As I am not a psychologist or counselor there is very little I can do to help people on an individual scale, except to advise them to seek help. The best thing anyone can do to prevent more tragedies like the one my community endured is to get educated, and to educate others on the matter, and I want to be a part of that effort. I just don't know how. Joining Facebook groups isn't enough for me, I want to be one of the real activists, but I don't know what exactly I can do or how I can do it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey there,

welcome to TH. It's awesome that you want to do something! I know this isn't too exhaustive a list, but there's always replying with some advice or encouragement to people's posts around here, and maybe you could check to see if there's any sort of teen-to-teen talkline you could volunteer at? A school counselor might be able to help suggest some other ways of helping, too.

Hey there

It's great to hear how supportive you are of suicide awareness and prevention. I'm glad that you want to be proactive about it, too
Posting on these forums is a great start to helping people out, support forums are great places to visit if you're interested in helping people out.
You may want to think about making campaigns, speeches, posters annd brochures or performing assemblies at school to make people more aware of suicide and more aware of help that is available - that way you will be active in educating and hyelping people.
Another option may be to volunteer somewhere near you which specialises in mental health or has a friend or buddy scheme. If you search for 'volunteering [location]' in google, there should be some websites which should be able to tell you of opportunities in your area. There are options for under 18s, but once you are 18, there'll be more opportunites for you to volunteer.
What do you mean about 'real activist'? What do you consider a real activist to do? If you think about that, then you could try and fit that role.
Being there for people when they need help is the best thing that you can do.

To repeat what others have said, it's GREAT that you want to help others by spreading awareness.

I'll tell you what I did for three years in a row that was small yet effective: I made yellow ribbons (like the breast cancer ones, only yellow ones for suicide awareness) and glued them to individual pins I bought from a craft store. As I gave these out the first day of September (suicide awareness month), I asked if they knew what this month represents, explained to them what a porblem suicide is becoming, especially for teens, and asked them to wear the ribbon on their shirt for support.

I want to do this too. But I'm always afraid if I do something publicly people will start to suspect I'm suicidal...generally people are pretty apathetic at my school. Even though we just had two suicides in a month.

I think that it's so cool that you want to speak out and help with this topic.

Have you ever heard of the organization To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA)?

Here is their Mission Statement:
"To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery."

You can find them on facebook, myspace, and they have their own site. You could try to get involved with this, maybe spread the word about it?

That's the only thing I can really think of right now.. Best of luck to you! You are great

Hey,

I know this is a little late but I figured I could add some anyways.

Okay, volunteering is a great way to go. If you aren't sure where to look you could always call a local therapist(or if you have one ask yours) and see if they know of any volunteer oppurtunities.

I think doing something through your school would be a great idea too(Are you still in high school?) You should think about starting a club for suicide prevention and awareness. If you were to start a club maybe you could have helpline numbers and numbers of local psychologists printed up for every meeting so kids could have them. Heck, if you don't start a club maybe you could just post/pass things like that out all over your school and your community? Encourage people to talk and stuff like that.

Someone mentioned TWOLOHA and that is a good place to look as well and they actually have an intern thing that they do as well. I don't know how it works but you could look into doing that as well.

Hope this helped and wasn't too redundant and if you need any more advice I might be able to help you out so feel free to pm me.
