depression? - August 8th 2009, 01:40 AM

ahhh. i've tried writing stuff out but it all just sounds stupid. i think i'm depressed, suffering from insomnia, and serious anxiety/self-confidence issues. i've always felt like this, for as long as i can remember since i was a child, but it's not like i had a difficult upbringing, it's been fairly average. i have no energy at all, and i always feel tired even when i spend the day doing nothing. i don't want to babble too much because i'm probably sounding like every other teenager but this has been bothering me for a while about saying something to someone, i just can't to any of my friends/family, because i think they wouldn't get it/care.

Hey there,
Sorry to here you are going through such a hard time right now. It sounds to me like you must be really upset. You don't have to have a difficult upbringing though to be deppressed or have anxiety. The insomnia is probably from the fact you are having anxiety issues. When I get anxious it also becomes really hard for me to fall asleep. I also have suffered from what you described such as being irritated about little things and wanting to spend the day doing nothing. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. Although you may feel different from the people your age, I'm sure many of them are also going through things similar to the ones you are going through.

Don't worry about babbling anyway! We are here to listen and to help. I think that you should try telling a close friend or family member. Even if you think they wouldn't care or understand it is definately worth the try. It's always a lot easier when you have someone on your side there for you even just to talk to. It always feels better to get things off your chest. Good luck with talking it out and PM me if you need anything!

Hey there,

don't worry, you're not babbling. And you sound like a person, not generic.

I second what Alessa's said. Things like depression and anxiety and insomnia can all affect each other. Have you tried talking to your doctor about what's been up? She/he can give you a more concrete sense of what's going on and suggestions on how to deal with it. Counselors can also be helpful.

For self-confidence, sometimes finding one thing that you like about yourself, even if it's not something big (I usually go with the fact that I like how silver nail polish looks on me ), and focus on letting yourself like that, and be confident with the fact that you like it. Then try building from there. Things like challenging yourself to always look other people in the eye, even people you're just passing in the hallway, can also help in being more comfortable with yourself.

Hang in there

Hey there,

I am glad you decided to reach out for help and I hope that we are able to help you.

I think talking to your doctor about this would be a great idea because they could better help you find out what is going on. I know it can be difficult to talk to someone about these types of things but in the end it is always best.

I like Dancer's suggestion on how to build your self confidence; it makes a lot of sense and it does help. If you have one or more things you like about yourself to focus on when you are feeling badly about yourself it can really help because you can push those bad thoughts out of your head and only focus on the good. With time the good things about yourself might grow as well.

Best of luck and if you ever need someone to talk to feel free to pm me.

Great advice here, I couldn't agree more with their suggestions to see your doctor. I recently found Byron Katie's the work on youtube, it's been very helpful for self-dialoguing any problems you're having. Sending you hugs. xxx

Laura,
I know its hard to reach out and talk to people, especially if you haven't talked to your family or friends before. It may seem imposssible but you can do it. If you want to get better you need to reach out no matter how hard it is. The first step would be to tell someone close to you. After that everything is downhill. Just talk and let it all out. Trust me once you do let someone close to you know, you will feel soooooooo much better! Good luck and PM me if you need anything at all.

Hey Laura,

I understand how daunting telling someone can be. I freaked out for a while before I went to my mom to ask about seeing a counselor. But the world did not end. Parents often react much more calmly than expected in these situations. And going to the doctor about how you feel is just like going for any other sort of check-up; if your throat hurt and didn't stop, you'd want to get it addressed. Well, if you hurt emotionally and that doesn't stop, then the doctor can address that, too. Often just as simply.

Hang in there. It'll be okay
